Depends on the character. Usually whatever the character's main stat is needed to do whatever they're supposed to do.

I try to keep it balanced in the long run but mostly STR and AGI so I can attack first and end random battles quickly.

Depends on the character's specialty and the effectiveness of stats in games. I usually focus on the damaging stats rather than the defensive ones, but sometimes AGI conveys a significant combat advantage or there's a stat with a massive advantage outside of combat.

In a vacuum, I'd likely focus on magic-related stats.

STR usually. Heavy weapons are what i gravitate to and if you kill stuff fast enough you dont need hp and defense.

whatever lets me attack more often or hit harder (if both are an option, I prefer the former slightly to the latter).

Offense is the best defense. Enemies can't hurt you when they're dead.

It usually results in more interesting narrative as well.

And in Mass Effect, some of the most epic moments are the ones where you pull out a Persuade or Intimidate option and throw shit back in someone's face with hardcore truth bombs

It's the same reason why I take Coercion the moment it's available in Dragon Age:Origins, even at the expense of other potentially valuable utility or combat skills. Given the opportunity, I'm going to be the most charming and persuasive silver-tongued bastard in history (and if nothing else, it helps explain why all these other assholes are always willing to follow me into hell and back after 5 minutes of conversation and maybe one recruitment sidequest).

idk, the number of games I can recall where it gives you something cool are vastly outweighed by the ones where it's marginal to story. The Mass Effects of the world are more the exception than the rule. In other games, it just seems to let you get lower prices and other fringe benefits.

I like the systems more where you have to use an item until you master it where you can then just the skill or magic whenever you want afterwords.
