Yes everyone laughs at the launch price in retrospect but fails to realize that Blu-Ray players alone were still pushing $1000 when the PS3 launched.

RROD and Virtual Boy are the winners in this contest, but honourable mention goes to the Power Glove.

@thelovefist

I have a Virtual Boy. It does NOT hurt your eyes (like everyone here is claiming it does). As long as you play it in a dimly lit room, then it will NOT hurt your eyes. If you play it in a room that is fully lit with light, then when you take your eyes out of the Virtual Boy, then your eyes will not feel good from the light that hits you. It has to do with going from almost zero light to all light in one shot (if that makes sense).

As for some 360's having the RROD... yes... that does win.
The RROD was fucking horrible.
I know several people who avoided buying the Xbox One because they are still bitter at the RROD situation when they owned a 360.

As for the Power Glove...
YES, the Power Glove was horrible, but it's not a console, just a fucked up excuse for a gimmick "controller"... that didn't work properly 98% of the time...

If I had realized in 2005 that the X360 would be so hamstrung by its lack of features, I'd have forked over the extra $200 for the PS3.

The Wifi adapter alone was $100

It's like criticising a laptop for being $599 because a Chromebook is $399

the 32x as a concept was a big design flaw imo

It's not so much a design flaw as it is a gigantic clusterfuck.
"Design flaw" implies that someone intentionally designed something, instead of duct-taping some components together and attaching craptons of shielding and three or four cables to get it to work.

@Questionmarktarius

I will argue that the 32X's metal shield things that went into the Genesis cartridge slot was a HUGE design flaw. I have a 32X and the instructions say that the metal shield things are mandatory since the instructions claim that not using the metal shield things with the 32X can cause HUGE problems for the 32X and Genesis (they arguably are NOT needed, but at the time, I followed the instructions and put them in). Putting those abominations into the Genesis cartridge slot is one of the most horribly difficult video game related things I ever had to do. Fuck those 32X metal shield satanic things. LOL.

360 is probably the winner here.

Honorable mention to the early model PS2's and their Disc Read Error non-sense. I went through 3 PS2's before Sony finally admitted it was an issue and offered to fix all 3 for free. It would read PS1 and Blue Backed PS2 games but not DVD based games or movies.

To be fair, you saw no difference between Component Cables and HDMI back then.
HD DVD player would have raised the price too much, and to be complete honest, if they had included one you would have said that they didn't supported the Bluray format instead.
Ethernet > WiFi
This was when all games were running without any harddrives. Insert the disc and you could play without any problem. How many games required a harddrive during the whole Xbox 360 lifetime? Less than 5? You couldnt even install games back then!
Yeah, the RROD was a too big problem.

Why is the Switch's HDMI cord so fat and...idk the word I'm looking for...less malleable/flexible? stern? It's fat af. They want you to knock it over so you can buy another one.

I can think of one worse for the Switch, and that's the general design of its peripherals and where its charge cable is located. Instead of being smart and putting it on the top, or back, they put it at the bottom..... so you can't use the f'n kick stand when charging....

If they put it on top, they could still use the charge dock, you would just insert the thing from the top.

Nintendo has an ass backwards obsession with not paying royalties.

They refused DVD video royalties with the Wii and BD +Dolby Surround royalties with Wii U, so they couldn't play DVDs or BLU RAY discs (respectively) despite having the actual hardware to do so.

@SavageGlum100 So your experience with the VB has to be the same as everyone elses?

And your post is "as long as you play in the exact right conditions you're fine" which is a BS defence when it was meant to be a portable system.

They actually didn't. They used standard DVDs and BD ROMs but Nintendo refused to pay format royalties so they couldn't officially call them that. There are home brew DVD playback apps for Wii.

the OG 360 was just at a weird time w/r/t features

in 2005 WiFi and HDMI weren't ubiquitous, having an easily replaceable HDD was still somewhat novel(even if it was proprietary) and HD DVD drives didn't exist until after the 360 launched

Sony 1up'd all those features a year later but that was also kind of mandatory given the PS3's pricing and market positioning(as a "premium" media center device)
