17. Ashelia "Ashe" B'nargin Dalmasca (Final Fantasy XII)

The Good: Ashe is probably the most dynamic character among the main cast. Most of them are fairly static (which isn't necessarily bad because Balthier is still awesome anyway), but Ashe really develops as a character over the course of the game. At first, she doesn't really trust anyone. Balthier and Fran are filthy air pirates, and Vaan and Penelo are guilty by association. Basch is a traitor and a king slayer, so she naturally doesn't trust him either. However, she does eventually regard them as trusted companions. She also changes her strategy for defending Dalmasca. She originally thought to fight fire with fire, but she eventually realized that wouldn't really accomplish anything. It's cool to watch her grow over the course of the game like that.

The Bad: I mean, "B'nargin?" Really? I think the name "Ashelia" is really pretty (to the point that I might try to name my daughter after her if I could get away with it and I ever actually have children), but "B'nargin" just sounds gross. Also, what's with that picture of her standing there with her finger on her nose? Ashe's in-game model looks kinda different from how she does in her artwork, too. She can also get a little too "Princess-y" at times where she must be right and you must be wrong, such as feeling the need to correct everyone every time they say "Insurgence" instead of "Resistance."

The Best: That being said, I always love it when Ashe tells Vaan not to interrupt her. It's like he's trying to step up and be the main character, and she puts him in his place. Everything good in Final Fantasy XII happens at the top of Pharos Lighthouse, and Ashe firmly and finally rejecting the Occuria is her moment. She doesn't want to be a dictator or conqueror. She just wants to be free and be able to stand on her own strength. It's a cool climax for her character.
