That looks like a pretty solid draft to me. How many people in the league?

My draft is on Monday.

It's a ten team league. I like that size because there's usually enough good players to go around for everyone.

Episode 21 (Sigh II)

I like that they place a reflective sheen over the "O" in "SONY" on the camera so they don't have to just change a letter to avoid copyrights.

Kyon: Yeah, that's me: PR guy, nice guy, whatever.
Taniguchi: You're definitely in the latter category.
Kyon: Huh?
Taniguchi: Well yeah, you're so nice, you'd stick with somebody even if you knew they were headed straight for the edge of a cliff. The typical nice guy.

Taniguchi's assessment is close to being right on the money. Book 10 in particular demonstrates this to be true.

Black Mage Nagato the best. It's just another instance of taking advantage of her opportunity to dress up to express personality that's otherwise suppressed because she wears it constantly. Since her "function is to observe only," she apparently can't take independent action to change her outfit, but she doesn't resist someone else changing it for her. She seems to enjoy it, although who knows? Maybe Nagato just lets it happen for the same reason that she's only there to observe. I like the ambiguity and mystery of how she really feels though.

All the S.O.S. Brigade members' aghast reactions when they see that Haruhi has cast them in her movie as their secret identities is one of my favorite things in anything ever. It's such an amazing gag to play off of Haruhi's ability to alter reality while being completely oblivious to it at the same time.

Kyon: I'm not too crazy about seeing the world go to pieces.
Koizumi: If I might make a suggestion, you should stop worrying so much about the world. You should be more worried about yourself. If necessary, there are others who can replace Ms. Nagato and I. However, there is no understudy for you.

The movie certainly demonstrates that to be true. I do like how the series shows that, despite being the "normal" one, Kyon's actually the most important S.O.S Brigade member.

In the book, Haruhi hums popular songs at various points during this arc, and Kyon even lists what they are (It's a Marilyn Manson song at one point). I suppose they changed them to public domain songs for the anime to avoid copyrights.

I love that when Haruhi says they're going to have a quick meeting and gather around, they all just take a few steps forward in sync.

These commercials are so great.

So, as I close in on finishing Bloodborne NG++ and the Platinum I want to give my full endorsement of this game. It's incredible. I'd say if you have even a passing interest in it (which was roughly what I had in it before I got it) then you should definitely make an effort to play it.

The gameplay/combat is probably my favorite for any action RPG I've played. The sense of accomplishment and progress as you improve and learn how to handle different situations is incredible. The atmosphere and aesthetics are top-notch. The story and characters, while understated and subtle, are very interesting if you put the effort into exploring the different threads. Heck, there are details - both story/characters and gameplay - that I'm still stumbling into and discovering for the first time on NG++.

There are definitely a few changes I'd make to improve it (boss replay is the main one, not automatically throwing you into NG+ after you beat the game is another, ban the forbidden woods) but it's just so good IMO.

Been playing with the Rakuyo on NG++ and it's so good. lol wrecking most things in my path. Love the faster playstyle after I played with Burial Blade on NG+. Which is another thing, with so many different weapons you can pretty much find one that works with your preferred style of play.

So yeah, we're probably not going to be playing much defense again this year, but at least it seems like our offense will be much better. Maybe we can just outscore other teams this year. Guarantano showed flashes of promise, and Jordan looks like he's going to be really good. They've just gotta learn to be more consistent.

Episode 23 (Sigh IV)

I said this in my lost notes about Sigh III, but I love the gradually building tension between Kyon and Haruhi. It can get really awkward at times, but in a good way.

It's hilarious that everyone makes up their own rationalizations for the supernatural things around them, like Nagato effortlessly pulling a gate open so they can get inside a closed area. I feel like most of us would do the same thing, really, as opposed to our first thoughts being that something miraculous just happened.

One of the most impressive feats Nagato accomplishes in the series is her being fast enough to intercept an invisible laser.

Kyon: Here's another option for us to consider: We could knock Haruhi out cold and wake her up after the festival's over.
Koizumi: That's a frightening thought to consider, but if you're prepared to take responsibility for the outcome, I wouldn't get in your way.
Kyon: I don't think my shoulders can handle the weight of the world.

The irony here is that Koizumi actually does get in his way later on when he's on the verge of hitting her.

"What sorts of evil things do I have to do to live in a place like this?" Great line.

The scene where the tensions finally boil over is really well done. The discordant music is used to great effect. I said this in my lost notes, but the Sigh arc is basically where the S.O.S. Brigade gets pushed to the breaking point and it almost all falls apart. There's not just tension between Kyon and Haruhi, but between the other three members of the group at various points, too (Koizumi and Asahina, in particular). This is arguably Haruhi at her most dangerous as well. There's never really a threat of the group imploding after this, although the events of Disappearance have a lot to do with that moreso than this arc itself. That being said, Kyon nearly losing it goes a long way to Haruhi becoming aware of her selfishness because someone was finally willing to stand up to her, as evidenced by the fact that no Closed Space appears afterward. She actually feels responsible for what happened.

You know it's serious business when Koizumi and especially Tsuruya drop their smiles.

"Stop fighting! Stop it, or else...nevermind, it's classified anyway *passes out*." Might be Asahina's best line in the anime, and it helps relieve a little bit of the tension after that scene, too.

Koizumi's monologue to Kyon about how maybe Haruhi was given her powers in order to reshape the world into something better, which might mean they'll all be filtered out by the time she's done, is really interesting. It reminds me of the dilemma about using Holy in Final Fantasy VII.

Kyon has a tendency to play dumb in order to shut down conversations when he knows he's lost an argument.

That blink-and-you-miss-it moment of Haruhi holding her hair up like she's thinking about putting it up into a ponytail is excellent.

I kinda wish there had been something heartfelt between Kyon and Haruhi when they reconcile after their fight, especially from her. The way they handle it causes her powers to ramp up even more though, so I guess it was sort of necessary not to completely resolve the tension too soon.

Episode 24 (Sigh V)

Everyone's reactions when Shamisen starts talking are great. It even elicits a sidelong glance from Nagato.

Koizumi: He's right. People can say one thing and mean another.
Kyon: (Oh, shut up.)
Asahina: The cat does bring up a good point though...doesn't he?
Kyon: (I'm sorry, but do you think you could stop talking, too?)

Although he tries to say it as politely as possible, it's one of the rare times he has a negative thought about Asahina.

I love that the one time Kyon is expecting Koizumi to say he's only kidding is the one time he's totally serious. Koizumi's discussion about how they need to figure out some way to make Haruhi believe everything was a dream, lie, or mistake has made me wonder if they were going to find a way to explain the overall events of the series that way, too. Kyon's an infamous unreliable narrator, after all!

There are a few times in the series when it's possible Tsuruya overheard when they were discussing something related to Haruhi or one of their special powers, but if she did, she plays dumb about it. It's pretty inconclusive whether she knows about the reality behind the S.O.S. Brigade to any degree or not.

Nagato: There is no evidence that what Itsuki Koizumi says is actually the truth.
Kyon: (She's right. There's no proof. Koizumi's theory is just a convenient explanation for all the weird stuff that's happened to me, so who knows if that's the truth. The same goes for Miss Asahina's theory. There's no guarantee her version of things is the right one either.) What's your opinion about it? Who's telling the truth? And what about the stuff you were telling me before? You know, about auto-evolution.
Nagato: Regardless of which theory I present you with, there is no way for you to determine its truth.
Kyon: Why not?!
Nagato: There is no guarantee that what I have been saying is the truth either. Not for you anyway.

That conversation is kind of the essence of the series' underlying mysteries. They leave it entirely up to you as the viewer/reader to determine your opinion about what the truth is. They don't spell it out for you. Also, there's an implication in that conversation that Kyon trusts Nagato more than anyone else. He reacts to an expression he sees on her face at the end there, but he doesn't clarify what he thinks it is in the anime. In the book, he thinks it's something akin to indecision or being unsure of herself, which would certainly be unusual for Nagato.

I love the rapid-fire sequence of events toward the end of the movie as Kyon quickly moves from one weird thing happening to the next. They don't show it in the anime, but the book mentions that one of Asahina's colored contacts creates miniature black holes.

Koizumi's mention of other organizations like his own foreshadows events in the later books that we sadly never got to see in animated form. Koizumi couches his accusation as just a joke (whether it is or not is debatable), but it is certainly worth considering if Asahina is simply playing the pitiable moe girl to try to sway Kyon over to her side. I don't know that Asahina Small has the guile to pull it off on her own, but Asahina Big certainly could (and might be feeding her information and tasks to that end unbeknownst to her younger self). I feel like she has definitely tried to use her sex appeal to manipulate Kyon at various points.

The biggest mystery of all is how the movie actually got finished.

The last scene of Sigh in the anime was actually the first scene in the book. Not sure why they inverted it since it's a direct followup to the end of Melancholy. The anime makes it seem like this happens after the movie stuff ended, but it actually happened before (and Kyon indirectly references it at one point during Sigh in the anime).

So I was randomly browsing through Prime's video selection, and I found an original series based on an Agatha Christie novel I read, Ordeal by Innocence. I was looking through some of the reviews, and apparently, they completely changed the story, even down to who the killer turns out to be. That made me kind of curious since I'm not a super purist when it comes to adaptations.

I really hope they kept the last conversation from the book though because that was one of most amazing final exchanges in a book I've ever seen.

Episode 25 (The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina)

I wish they had dubbed the opening theme song to the film. Then again, "COME ON LET'S DANCE COME ON LET'S DANCE BABY" is pretty amazing.

This episode is like snark heaven for Kyon as he gets to lampshade nearly every absurdity about the film. It's so great.

I find myself sometimes just randomly saying some of the terribly acted lines and gestures from this episode, like the shop owner dude going, "Ahhhhh, that's good," or my personal favorite, Asahina's, "I will risk my own life to stop you." The delivery of that line in the dub is incredible. Nagato's "Please make your funeral arrangements, for when next we meet, it will be the last" is amazing, too. I never thought I wanted deadpan trash talk until this moment.

The conversation between Nagato and Koizumi is brilliant for how atrociously nonsensical and poorly acted it is. In a movie where everyone is a terrible actor, Koizumi easily takes the cake with his weird gestures (I love the one where he runs his finger from his forehead down to the tip of his nose for some reason), the way he looks off into the distance instead of at Nagato, and flubbing his lines ("I understand that he--no, in this scene, it's me, so I--I am a kind of key").

Nagato awkwardly hugging Koizumi with a blank expression on her face is great.

In an episode full of great moments, my favorite might be when Shamisen tries to interject with a sensible solution to the problem posed by the movie, and then Nagato slaps him with her star wand and says, "I am also a ventriloquist." Her lies are always so blatant.

In the book, this scene after the movie is finished doesn't happen, so it's basically the only story in the series that Haruhi doesn't actually appear in.

Episode 26 (Live Alive)

One of my favorite parts of this episode is seeing Haruhi and Nagato running around in the background doing various things leading up to them performing in the concert.

There's a weird little plot point that gets dropped into the last book about Kunikida, whom we otherwise know very little about except that he and Kyon went to middle school together. Apparently, the reason he went to North High was because of Tsuruya (who is super intelligent, according to him), but it's not because he has any sort of romantic feelings for her. It's more of an intellectual thing, if I remember right. They weren't friends before they officially met during Boredom either. I don't remember all the details here because it's Kunikida, of course, and it's mostly mentioned in passing.

Taniguchi: It's a tactic I developed over years of experience.
Kyon: (What good is your experience when your success rate is zero?)

What a great comeback. Also, this is one of the rare times when Kyon acknowledges that Haruhi would get jealous if she saw him in a romantic situation with another girl. It's hard to tell how much of his oblivious nature to his own feelings for Haruhi and her feelings for him is an act because of his nature as an unreliable narrator, but he drops hints once in a while that he gets it. I remember watching a video from a con where someone asked Crispin Freeman (Kyon's English VA) about Kyon and Haruhi's relationship, and he said it's obvious that they love each other and will end up together, but if they actually admit it aloud to themselves or to the other person, it removes a lot of the tension and drama from the plot, so they have to continue to play dumb about it.

If I remember right, in the book, Haruhi doesn't play the guitar. She only sings. It's cool that they decided to dub the songs she sings here though since Wendee Lee has a nice singing voice. The first song is the one that gets all the hype from the fanbase, but I liked "Lost My Music" better. The series actually has a lot of good music from image albums. Haruhi and Nagato have the best ones overall mostly because their VAs are also accomplished singers, but the others have a standout song or two. Kyon has a few hilarious ones because even when he's singing, he can't stop himself from interjecting snark between the lines.

I like that Kyon's version of "rocking out" is tapping his index finger with his arms crossed.

"After lunch, I took a walk. I figured it would settle my stomach. And no, there wasn't any other reason." Come on, Kyon. You're not fooling anyone with that one.

Haruhi: This sucks. I mean, why can't I just forget about it already?
Kyon: How should I know? (But I do. It's because you're just not used to being appreciated by others. The things you do aren't things that people usually thank you for.)

It's nice to see Kyon say something heartfelt and sincere about Haruhi like this once in a while. I also like that the wind randomly blows the grass back in her face the moment she tries to throw it at Kyon. There's a part of her that would never want to hurt him, even if she won't acknowledge it, so I guess it backfired on her there!

They also did a spinoff drama CD based on this episode when Haruhi says she wants to perform in a band for the next arts festival. It's not bad.

I decided that Labor Day Weekend would be movie nights for me and watched the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. I had previously seen 1.11 and 2.22, but this was my first time watching 3.33.

Still love this franchise. Really enjoyed them and got more emotional watching them than I expected. 1.11 is a pretty good adaptation of the original series' episodes 1-6, and 2.22 is still great even once it starts going off canon.

3.33 I went in "prepared" knowing that it has generally been hated for going so far off the rails and I think I still liked it. Definitely don't think it deserved the hate at least, but maybe that's because I went in knowing and with an open mind. I could see maybe reacting differently if I didn't know. It has some definite flaws but some of them I think might be retroactively patched up once the Final movie comes out and fills in some details. Maybe. It's Evangelion though so you can't count on that happening. >_>

I think the themes and ideas it explored definitely are interesting, if not fully realized (again, something that could - and probably will - be helped in the final movie.) I imagine in the end it's going to be held back a bit by the movie format and would have worked better if it were its own season or something but hey, that's all right, we still have the original series and EoE anyway.

Episode 27 (Day of Sagittarius)

This one is up there as one of my favorite episodes in the show because of all the sci-fi imagery. They really had fun with this one because none of this stuff is in the book. There, it's just a straightforward retelling of the game between the S.O.S. Brigade and the Computer Club (with no cutaways to the Computer Club either since it's all written from Kyon's perspective, of course).

I like the little details like who's in the crew of each's members ship. Haruhi has a crew of Star Wars/Trek-esque aliens. Nagato's is a crew of Nagato clones. Asahina's is a bunch of cat people, for some reason. Koizumi's is a bunch of green dudes, whom I assume are supposed to be espers, I guess. They never actually show Kyon's crew, for some reason.

I love how the Computer Club president is being so brash and cocky about the fact that they created a game that was on display during the festival and rhetorically asks, "Maybe you saw it?" When Kyon says he doesn't remember seeing it, that veneer drops and he mutters that maybe they were displaying it in a bad location before quickly trying to recapture that arrogance. I also love how flustered he gets when Haruhi offers to give them Asahina or Nagato as a prize for winning but flatly and adamantly refuses when she offers herself instead.

Part of me thought that the S.O.S. Brigade was going to lose the game against the Computer Club, especially after how poorly their "practice sessions" went, in order to prove that Kyon was right to trust that Haruhi has matured and wouldn't create a Closed Space if they lost.

That being said, I can appreciate Haruhi's bum rushing tactics where you favor offense at the expense of defense. I like being aggressive in most games I play, and I've never been the type of person who thinks two or three moves ahead.

I like how Asahina is actually terrible when it comes to using present-day technology because future tech where she's from has advanced so far beyond it. In the movie, Asahina Big explains that stuff like the internet just exists inside their minds now and they don't need the physical form of a computer anymore, which would explain why she doesn't know how to use one.

Nagato waving the mouse around in the air is the best. I also like watching her progression during their training sessions where she goes from slowly poking around the keyboard with one finger, to hunting and pecking with two fingers, to rapidly moving around the keyboard effortlessly.

In the book, in addition to being able to see the entire screen at once, Nagato explains that the Computer Club is using a cheat that allows them to teleport. While Kyon is adamant on not allowing them to cheat to win, in the book, he does allow Nagato to hack their cheat to cause them to teleport right in the middle of the entire S.O.S. Brigade fleet the next time they try to use it, which is exactly what happens. He allows karma to do its thing, I guess you could say.

"It's time to launch the <bleep>dams!" *blurry image of a Gundam* So good.

Kyon realizing that Nagato is actually having fun and wants to win is a great moment. Nagato getting in the last shot is great, too. As usual, great use of music for the climactic moments

GLORY TO THE COMPUTER CLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB! That line gets me every time.

Nagato going "Perhaps I will" in response to helping out the Computer Club once in a while (as well as mimicking typing on the pages of her book) is a really nice moment that showcases how she's been very slowly changing over the series.

She the best. Been a few years since this had popped up, and now I'm sad she has no chance of winning.

Episode 28 (Someday in the Rain)

This is an unusual episode for many reasons. It's exclusive to the anime (although I believe Tanigawa still wrote the script), and while you'd figure they'd try to do something exciting for an original episode, it's meant to showcase how dull the S.O.S. Brigade would be without Kyon around. It just demonstrates that he really is the lynch pin that holds everything together. It's the kind of thing you can only really do in the anime because the books are all written from Kyon's perspective. The anime is mostly from his perspective, too, of course, but it does occasionally cut away to other things he's not privy to (like the Computer Club stuff in the previous episode).

It also kind of demonstrates that the S.O.S. Brigade didn't participate in super exciting adventures every single day. It can seem that way sometimes because those are the only things we see, but they had "normal" days where nothing in particular happened, too. It kinda reminds me of Hyouka in one of the later books where Hotaro says that the Classic Lit Club didn't hang out every single day. There were days where only one or two people would be there, or even days where none of them were there. While this episode is kinda boring, I do appreciate its attempt to portray their daily life somewhat realistically.

This episode also shows that Asahina wouldn't stand a chance without Kyon around to keep Haruhi at least somewhat in check because Nagato and Koizumi sure aren't any help. Koizumi's random observations standing outside the room are pretty great.

It's interesting that Nagato points out to Tsuruya where Haruhi and the others are when she asks, but she won't do it when Kyon asks.

The real mystery of the episode is who left their cardigan over Kyon as he was sleeping: Nagato or Asahina. I'd like to believe Nagato did, of course, but either option is viable.

I like how Kyon asks Haruhi if she drew anything on his face while he was sleeping, and then she does the same thing to him in the movie.

Friends re-watch complete!

Man, that series finale is so great.

Rankings: Chandler > Joey > Ross > Phoebe > Rachel > Monica

Joey & Chandler is a top 5 bromance in all of fiction.

I guess I need to find a place for Phoebe in the Female Character Rankings 2.0 now.

Nagato > Maya > Yakumo > Kurisu > Chizuru > Estelle > Yukiko > Fina > Eru > Phoebe > Aqua > Makoto > Shoko > Mitsuru > Yui > Tessa > Takano > Yachiyo > Shiori > Daphne > Milla > 2B > Wagatsuma > Ritsu > Akane > Pepper > Brawne > Amy > Rin > Namine > Seo > Mitsuha > Peach > Botan > Sophia > Yurippe > Mikasa > Samus > Eureka > Art3mis > Valentine > Mizuno > Zelda > Vera > Elizabeth > Yuri > Cora > Kotori

There we go.

Anyway, I think I'm going to go ahead and watch the Disappearance movie. I feel like it'll probably do me some good right about now.

Not sure how thorough I'll be with notes considering how long the movie is, but we'll see how it goes.
