yes it is clearly shot as a first episode to introduce new people to the characters because it was the original first episode

I would say distinguished from the rest of the broadcast order though. None of the "out of order" episodes particularly feel meant to be watched that way.

Did you never watch the series in 2009 order?

Also, I don't think Leonhart really needs to be introduced to Haruhi at this point...

Speaking of which, I've defeated half of the Mavericks in X4 so far. I haven't been using a guide or anything to figure out weaknesses or find capsules or Heart Tanks or whatever. Mostly been playing blind. Got lucky and happened to have one of the Maverick's weaknesses for one boss, so that was fun. It's also kind of neat that you can bring riding armor to the Magma Dragoon fight. Also, it threw me off when he started shouting the names of Street Fighter moves.

Episode 3 (Melancholy III)

I love this scene where Nagato explains everything about herself, the DITE, and Haruhi. The presentation is vintage KyoAni, with all the rapidly changing angles and how everything gradually gets more psychedelic the deeper into her explanation Nagato gets. This episode in general is where the series starts to pick up momentum as the other three members of the S.O.S. Brigade reveal their true natures to Kyon. The progression of the storytelling during Melancholy in general is really well laid out. You have no reason to believe anything they're telling you about themselves and Haruhi, so you're not sure which direction the show will take from here. Then they all prove that what they said was true in the next episode, and the series never looks back from there.

Nagato: There is a reason she chose you and not someone else.
Kyon: No way.
Nagato: Way.

So good.

Kyon: I could just run out and tell Haruhi everything you just explained to me.
Nagato: She does not take the information you feed her seriously.
Kyon: ......That's true.

The premise that Haruhi has all this power without realizing it or believing it (as well as the idea that she's probably better off never knowing she has it) is really interesting, I think. I feel like the story was progressing toward a point where she would learn all about this and be able to handle it, but again, we may never know.

It's interesting that you can tell almost right away that Asahina is extremely uncomfortable around Nagato. Even Future Asahina (or Asahina Big, as Kyon calls her in the books) is scared of Nagato, perhaps because she understands better than anyone what she's really capable of. Book 7 explores this in more detail (again, we need a season 3 just for Book 7 if nothing else; it's so good). Asahina doesn't actually dislike Nagato at all. Her fear isn't rooted in hatred.

The irony that Haruhi and Kyon never end up in the same group whenever they split up to search for mysterious phenomenon is great. While Haruhi has the power to make anything she desires a reality, she would actually have to come to terms with and be able to admit to herself that she wants to be with Kyon, so it never ends up happening.

Asahina's explanation of how time travel works in this series is pretty intriguing. It's also inconsistent in some ways, but it's probably due to the fact that she's being kept out of the loop on a lot of things by her superiors. It's also interesting to think that she may or may not already know how everything plays out before it happens, but it's hard to tell how much she really knows due to her "That's classified" self-censor. I feel like it works the way nanomachines in MGS2 censor anyone trying to say "The Patriots" into "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo."

I really love the scene where Kyon takes Nagato to the library. It's the closest thing you see to pure elation from her in the main series because she practically floats away to read books when she first gets there. The gag where Kyon falls asleep and screams really loudly upon feeling his phone vibrate cracks me up every time, too. But this is another one of those instances where Kyon doesn't realize how significant what he's doing is because he's just being himself. He takes Nagato to the library and gets her a library card because he thinks it's something she'd enjoy and because she'd never leave otherwise. He doesn't think anything else of it, but it clearly means a ton to Nagato because this is probably the first time in her entire existence that someone has done something nice to her for her benefit and enjoyment. It's why she preserves this particular memory even as she changes everything else in the movie. It's weird to say, but the two most important events in the entire series are Kyon asking Haruhi about her hair and getting Nagato a library card.

Episode 3 (Melancholy III) continued

One of the most fascinating aspects of the series is the fact that the explanations and theories of Nagato, Asahina, and Koizumi contradict each other in many ways, so it's hard to tell who's correct. It's possible none of them are correct (or rather, they're all being duplicitous), but it's also possible that they're all at least partially correct. We just don't know what to believe and what not to believe.

It's funny that Koizumi gets to be the blabbermouth of the group because he's the only other guy. His conversations with Kyon are almost always thought-provoking. Of all the members in the S.O.S. Brigade, he's the most likely to intentionally deceive everyone, but Kyon does seem to grow to trust him more and more over the course of the series anyway.

Episode 4 (Melancholy IV)

It's weird to think that Haruhi might have actually been the one to implant the idea into Asakura to take action to force change because she overhears what she and Kyon are talking about at the beginning of the episode.

Haruhi's face as Kyon tries to explain to her why publicly posting pictures of Asahina is a bad idea is priceless. You can also make a correlation between Haruhi storming out soon afterwards and Koizumi dropping by later telling everyone he has to go to work (i.e., this sequence of events created a Closed Space).

This scene between Kyon, Nagato, and Asakura is what hooked me on the series. I was not ready for what transpired here at all, and it blew me away. The warring factions of the DITE are one of the more fascinating parts of the series, as I've said before. And now that I've read Hyperion, I totally get why Nagato was drawn to that book because it's similar in that regard.

Asakura: Your death is the perfect way to make Haruhi Suzumiya take some sort of action, you see. I'll finally be able to witness a large explosion of data. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Kyon: (Tell me about it!)

This is a top tier episode.

Once again, Kyon getting Nagato that library card might have been what saved his life because now she's determined to protect the person who was so kind to her. She also doesn't recreate her glasses because he simply tells her he likes her better without them (he's totally right, too), but that moment where she's feeling for the glasses on her face is super adorable (those big amethyst eyes man). Nagato's just the best.

I for-for-forgot my bag!

I like how the anime often hides or obscures Kyon's mouth when he's speaking so you can't tell if he's actually talking or if you're just hearing his inner monologue. The book does something similar by having very little of what he says in the books in quotes. You can sometimes only tell if he's talking out loud based on if someone reacts to what he's just said. It's a cool device.

Kyon saying "Super-Size me!" when Asahina tries to show him her star-shaped mole was Crispin Freeman ad-libbing that line and them sticking with it because of how great it was. He has a few lines like that in the show, but that's the standout one. One of the more interesting differences between the two Asahinas is that the older version is fully aware of her feminine wiles and willfully uses them to her advantage, while the younger one is more of an innocent fanservice girl. Asahina Big is definitely fully aware of how everything plays out in this time period. Of course, she's also lived all the events of the series already.

Another indication of Nagato's changing feelings toward Kyon is that in the first couple episodes, she barely said anything to him, even when he tried to engage her. She was super terse, even by her standards. But now, she responds to all of his questions, even when she can't answer them and does her best to have conversations with him, even if she's not the best at it. I do like that Nagato doesn't say anything at all when Kyon tells her he likes her better without glasses. It implies that the compliment makes her so happy that she lacks the capability to express it. Of course, like with much of Nagato's characterization, you have to do a lot of reading between the lines. Kyon does it, too. I tend to take his observations of her at face value, but it doesn't mean what he says is necessarily correct. I do like that much of the characterization for all the characters is left up to the reader/viewer to perceive and find between the lines. They all definitely develop and change over the course of the series, but it never beats you over the head with it.

Episode 5 (Melancholy V)

I wonder how many people in Nagato/Asakura's apartment complex are TFEIs. Also, we never learned what that acronym stood for, and we may never know. Asakura's apartment number is 505, which visually kind of looks like SOS. I figured that would be Nagato's apartment number. "708" doesn't seem to be code for anything as far as I can tell.

I like how Kyon is surprised by the fact that Haruhi is capable of having a normal conversation when she talks to the old man at the reception desk, as well as the fact that Nagato actually eats food. I also like that Nagato just looks at Kyon when Haruhi asks what happened to her glasses.

Haruhi's story about realizing that she didn't live a unique existence is one of the rare times you actually get a genuine glimpse into the "real" her. I can relate to her feeling of wanting to be special and wanting to be different from the people around you. I can also relate to the fact that Kyon really had no idea what to say in response to what she said. Sometimes it's a lot easier for me to write or think of something rather than to say it aloud.

Oh hey, early bird cameo from Arakawa driving the taxi that Kyon and Koizumi ride in. This dude is great in the Haruhi-chan series.

"I'm a little sick of hearing about this 'three years ago' crap!" Kyon is great.

This venture into Closed Space is pretty cool. It's interesting that we get two looks into it during Melancholy, but then we never see it again for the rest of the anime. I do wonder why the dub decided to call them "Shinjin" or whatever. I assume it's just literally the Japanese name, but I'm curious as to why they didn't give them an English name. The books just call them "Celestials."

"I don't know how I know. I just know that I know, you know?" Great quote.

Episode 6 (Melancholy VI)

This is probably my favorite episode in the series. It's just great from start to finish. I like the intro where Kyon reviews everything the other members of the S.O.S. Brigade has told and shown him over the last few episodes.

Kyon's reaction when Asahina sees the "mikuru" folder is fantastic. I wonder if Nagato got the idea to wave the mouse around from seeing Kyon trying to keep the mouse away from Asahina here.

You can tell Haruhi's slowly starting to change when she tells Kyon to get out before she starts changing when she would normally just start undressing whether he's there or not. Odd tidbit, but in the book, Haruhi just wears the one piece part of the bunny girl outfit, without the ears or the stockings.

You can see a couple of instances of Kyon doting on his little sister in this episode. It's neat that he's still reading "Hyperion" here.

Koizumi's speech to Kyon here is great, especially with how much he trolls him about the fact that he and Haruhi clearly love each other but they can't seem to figure it out for themselves. There's actually a bit of his characterization that's omitted from his anime. In the books, he makes it pretty clear that he doesn't enjoy being an esper. In this part of the book, he actually expresses a little bit of a relief that he might not have to be an esper anymore if Kyon and Haruhi don't get back from this Closed Space.

Nagato's speech to Kyon over the computer is great, too. "I'm betting on you." "I, as an individual, also feel a desire for you to return." "Another trip to the library would..." Too bad Kyon didn't get the hint!

The music when the Shinjin/Celestial appears at the climax of the episode is so great. I love the entire conversation between Kyon and Haruhi here as he tries to convince her to go back. "I'm having fun right now. I wonder why..." *quick camera pan to the two of them holding hands* Yes, it's a mystery. I think it's kind of funny that Kyon says that he'd even like to see Asakura again someday. I'm sure he doesn't feel that way after Disappearance!

Haruhi: I don't understand you. Weren't you sick and tired of the boring world we were living in? Didn't you want something weird and interesting to happen like I did?
Kyon: I used to. You know something, Haruhi? For the last couple of days, I've had all these strange things happening around me. You had no way of knowing this, but I guess you could say the world's been revolving around you. You've been completely unaware of it, but actually everything in the world was getting more weird and interesting.

In the book, Kyon actually gets extremely frustrated when he realizes what the "solution" to getting out of the Closed Space is because it's completely cliche and he should've seen it coming. The reason Haruhi creates a Closed Space for just her and Kyon is because she gets to the point that she's uncontrollably jealous of Asahina and afraid she's going to steal him away. The kiss assures Haruhi that Kyon loves her and only her, so she's not afraid to go back.

Haruhi wearing the mini-ponytail at the end of the episode is so good. The Melancholy arc has a great climax, but I suppose Tanigawa felt like he had to end the book on a satisfying note in case it was the only book. If only he still felt that way about the series...!

Came back to Bloodborne after about a 2 week pause for 7th Dragon III and man somehow I became super rusty again. Took a few hours to mostly shake it off. Accomplished my super silly RNG mission though.

Saw the Xenoblade 2 Torna DLC Story Trailer. So weird hearing the English voices that I feel like it distracted me the whole time. >_> Still looks pretty good! goty watch still on.

There's apparently a 36 minute video from gamescom too that I assume shows off some gameplay, but Youtube's curse of trolling me by saying it's not available in a format I can watch strikes again. I think it's because I got rid of Flash and I guess newly uploaded Youtube videos are only available in Flash or something. It'll work eventually but it's so annoying. Surprised the Story Trailer worked!

Heard someone say whoever was demo'ing it for that video say it was 30-40 hours of content. So for me that'll become 80 minimum somehow. >_>

hype

May have more to say once I can watch the video myself.

If you have Xenoblade 2 and its DLC Expansion Pass you can get Torna a week earlier (9/14) than if you wait for the physical version/don't have the Expansion Pass/get it standalone (9/21)

Otherwise, I don't think so. I haven't heard anything to that effect at least and I'd be surprised if they were holding that back as a surprise.

the curse is lifted

Okay, finally got to watch the gameplay video. yesssssssss so good.

Some notes (Spoiler tags are gameplay related in case anyone wants to be surprised):
-Battle System is expanded. The base is the same as the main game, but you can switch control from the Driver to the Blade, and the switch can be done in combat as a Switch Art. So you can go from Lora to Jin, and Jin switching in has a Topple Effect, etc. On top of having his own moveset of course. Team HP is shared, but when you take damage part of your HP bar is red and if you switch control like that the red portion is regained in the switch.
-Collection Points ARE LABELLED OMG. They have an icon that tells you what type of item they'll give (fish, flowers, etc.) and are color-coded for quality!
-Titan Development is replaced with a more personal kind of Affinity Map type thing more in line with Xenoblade 1 and is tied into an expanded crafting mechanic.

Episode 7 (Boredom)

Oh hey, it's the baseball episode!

There's this implication in the books that Asahina isn't actually very good at making tea. Kyon just convinces himself that she's perfect at everything because he places her on a pedestal. He might put her on a pedestal partly just to convince himself she's unattainable and so he shouldn't try to get too close to her. Even though she insists that Kyon can call her Mikuru, he sticks with calling her by her last name (with a -san in Japanese for good measure to keep things formal). It's a weird way of keeping Asahina at arm's length while seeming to worship her from afar.

It's interesting that Haruhi finds baseball boring on her own when she tries out for the club in the first episode, but she loves the idea of playing with the S.O.S. Brigade. I guess I can sort of understand that mentality though. Some things are more fun when you're doing them with close friends.

Nagato standing there stock still as baseballs whiz past her, only using her glove to block baseballs that are about to make direct contact with her, is excellent. It's part of what makes her so great.

I love the dramatic tension of them making it seem like Kyon is going to hit the ball, only to whiff and strike out. "I have dishonored my family."

Koizumi calls him "Kyon" here, but he never actually calls him that in the books. He doesn't use his name at all when he speaks to him, I guess because he wouldn't use his nickname. Him trolling Kyon and asking him to use the same "trick" he used to get out of Closed Space before is great, too.

I do love the idea of the show using all these extraordinary powers they have for completely mundane purposes, such as Nagato changing "the elemental properties" of the baseball bat to give it a "homing mode." It's part of the reason I love this show as a slice of life because of how it mixes the everyday with the supernatural.

"After all, the fate of the entire world is resting on my pitching. I guess the world's not worth very much." Great quote.

"As I looked over at Haruhi's brilliant smile..." This is one of the only times in the anime we see the other thing Kyon's a sucker for pop up. His ponytail fetish is well documented, but he's also a sucker for a pretty smile. The language he uses to describe Haruhi's smiles in the books is extremely over the top. And the word he uses to describe Nagato's tiny smile in the movie? Dazzling.

Episode 8 (Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody)

I'm honestly surprised this story got cut from season 1 because it's one of the most important ones in the series. A lot of this comes back into play in Disappearance, and in some of the books beyond that, too.

Haruhi's absurd logic for how wishes in Tanabata should work is so great. Their Tanabata wishes are kind of cliche, except for Nagato's, where she wishes for "Harmony/Unity" and "Reformation," presumably in reference to the DITE. It's a quick little insight into how Nagato feels about it, wishing the different factions would be able to come together as one, but also at the same time seemingly wishing the DITE itself would change. It might be an early indication of her slow transition toward autonomy and independent thought.

"Under the circumstances, this goes completely against my principles...Yeah, well, sort of." Kyon's the best.

Haruhi asks if Kyon believes in "sliders," and he says he hasn't met any of those yet. Haruhi's "aliens, time travelers, and espers" speech in the book includes "sliders" in it, too, but I guess they didn't bother including it in the anime because the series never introduced a slider. Well, as far as we know, anyway.

Asahina talks about how she just follows orders and doesn't always understand the things she's supposed to do. Over the course of the series, she honestly seems to be the one who's the least loyal to Kyon and the S.O.S. Brigade in general because she's afraid to disobey her superiors. Even Koizumi makes a promise at one point in the later books that if there ever came a time when he had to choose between the S.O.S. Brigade and the Agency/Organization, he'd side with the S.O.S. Brigade (although he said he'd do it just once, and of course, he's cryptic about even this, so who knows when or how it would ever come to pass, although presumably, it would have had the series continued).

Kyon: I don't know what's going to happen to us next, but whatever it is, I hope it's something that doesn't require as much thinking.
Koizumi: I'd prefer it if it stayed nice and quiet, but you'd prefer it if something happened?

Koizumi caught Kyon's true feelings slipping out there for a minute!

Haruhi does mention sliders in the anime just like she does in the books. It was cut from the English dub for some reason. It always bugged me that they did that.

Episode 9 (Mysterique Sign)

Kyon: Now that she pointed it out, I can't really say for sure whether I can or can't see it, but I wouldn't disagree with anyone who said it was or wasn't. How many negatives did I just use in that sentence? If anybody's got time, please total it up for me.
Haruhi: You're the one who's got the most free time!

This is one of those instances where it seems like inner monologue, and then Haruhi unexpectedly replies to him.

It's kind of weird that Kyon makes a reference to Tanabata three years ago (although the dub for season 1 calls it the "Star Festival") even though they didn't even include the story in season 1.

Kimidori is an interesting case because this episode implies that there might be more to her than meets the eye, but the anime never gets to the point where they explore it. The books reveal her true nature later on though.

Haruhi: Well, are his parents in Canada?
Kimidori: No, I believe they live somewhere in Honduras.
Haruhi: Oh ho, yes, Honduras indeed!
Kyon: What's with all this "indeed" business? I doubt she even knows where Honduras is. ...Let's see. Somewhere below Mexico, right?

Poor Computer Club President. Kimidori tries to say his name and Shamisen randomly shows up to meow and censor it. Also, Haruhi doesn't even remember the guy or what she did to him.

I love how Nagato just waits in place simply because Kyon told her to and doesn't move again until he realizes she's taken his request too literally.

I like how Koizumi tries to engage Nagato throughout this episode, but she largely ignores him when he tries to probe too deeply. They don't converse directly too often throughout the series. It usually only happens when there's some weird phenomenon that needs to be explained because they're almost always the only two who know what's going on at any given moment.

The battle with the cave cricket is over even faster in the book. It only takes one shot from Koizumi to take it down, and it never attacks them. I do appreciate the double Full Metal Panic references they threw in here as a result though!

Kyon repeatedly wonders why Haruhi chose him to be in the S.O.S. Brigade, and he even wonders if he's got latent superpowers that he's unaware of. I've seen people speculate that he does or they even wish he does, but I think the series is better off with him as a normal human being. Kyon being the real leader of the S.O.S. Brigade despite being the only normal one is a cool concept that I think conveys an interesting message.

I like how Kyon posits the idea that Nagato came up with this whole scheme as a way to satisfy Haruhi's boredom, while at the same time wondering if she also enjoys these things herself.

Episode 10 (Remote Island Syndrome, Part 1)

This is probably the episode (well, episodes since it's a two-parter) that deviates the most from the story in the book, although there's a good reason for some of it. The big difference is that Kyon's little sister doesn't come on the trip in the book. She still tries to hide in his suitcase. He just refuses to let her come.

I suppose the main reason Kyon's Little Sister comes is to make sure everyone stays on their best behavior because Kyon and Haruhi get extremely drunk (for some reason, Arakawa and Mori are okay with serving them alcohol) and do some "unseemly" things together, according to Koizumi. Neither one of them remembers what they did either. Haruhi promises never to drink again because she thinks the idea of not being able to remember stuff you did is stupid. She mentions this pledge again in Disappearance, and it's even in the movie, but they altered the line to say she promised never to drink at all, period, so it still works.

Kyon loses Old Maid in the anime, but there's a running gag in the books that Koizumi always loses every game he plays. It's hard to tell if he loses on purpose or he's just really bad at games, especially considering he actually studies chess strategies and stuff like that.

It's interesting that Arakawa is only known by one name, but Mori has a full name. There's a fan theory I've seen that people with only one name are normal, but people with two names have powers, so there's speculation that Mori is an esper.

Notice who Nagato is looking at when she says, "I love you." Hmmm...!

The cliffhanger at the end here is pretty great. In the next episode, Kyon proves witches don't exist...!
