Its my favorite movie, but I think you can probably find better sci-fi movies out there.

I think its the best sci-fi action movie though.

Dark City's really good; it was released around the same time as Matrix which hurt its distribution. 12 Monkeys is another good sci-fi movie; so is Forbidden Planet, Day the Earth Stood Still (1950s version), the Alien series as someone mentioned earlier, the Predator series (which has a lot of action btw), Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow (recent entries that star Tom Cruise), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Miyazaki's only animated sci-fi movie), and 10 million miles to Earth (filmed during the height of British sci-fi in the 1960s but still just as creepy). Of course Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Invaders from Mars, the Iron Giant and a few others should be on that list as well.

Yes, quite a lot, honestly.

And I say that as someone who actually quite likes the first Matrix. But I wouldn't even say it was the best sci-fi movie about virtual reality released in the same year, let alone the best sci-fi period of all time.

The Matrix was pretty great. Shame they never made any sequels, but it stands pretty well on its own.

I rather liked Dark City. Similar idea.

I was always partial to Tron - although I know it seems pretty outdated now it was pretty amazing for its time.

Looper was pretty neat.

I also always liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - but I haven't watched it in about 10 years or so - it might not be as great as I remember.

Fun Fact: The Matrix was filmed at the same studio as Dark City, and reused some of the sets.

Alien/Aliens, Them!, The Thing (both versions), It: The Terror From Beyond Space (prototype for Alien), Event Horizon, Flash Gordon, etc.

In fact, hundreds of science fiction movies are better than any in the Matrix franchise.
