I see this everywhere and it really rustles my jimmies, but never more than when I see dudes say "men" and "females" in the same sentence. Really says a lot about how they view women. Shit's dehumanising as fuck. If you refer to women as females please consider: 1) thinking about why you do that and 2) not doing it anymore.

This has been a PSA.

[for further clarity, on adjectives vs nouns]:

"she is female"

"she is a female"

"Females" can be used as a noun, but it's pretty much always in scientific or clinical settings. Calling a woman a female just makes it seem like you want to run tests on her or something.

It can occupy both parts of speech. Often times we use the word 'female' when we mean 'woman.' We can't know the chromosomes of a person, only make educated assumptions based on how they present themselves. As a result, it is more accurate and more humanizing to say 'woman' in most circumstances. Still, I try not to be overly didactic about it because I understand what's being said (unless someone is being ridiculous talking about females in the club like a hip hop dj from the aughts, then I'll assume they honestly don't know and ruin their evening).

Still I mostly only hear that use of the word female as a noun in professional circumstances or in some research context. That clinical connotation is part of what makes the word so noticable to me when I hear it in more casual conversation.

There was a male winner of a season of Big Brother UK who was tasked with coming up with as many synonyms for the word "women" as possible in a short period of time. Note, was like 18 or 19, naive as fuck and a bit airheaded, entertaining as fuck, but cringey at times. He quickly came up with "girls" and "birds" (more common in the UK), then lost focus and added stuff like "vagina people" and "vaginas" which further devolved into him having no ideas other than to resort to gibberish and motorboating noises. I wish I could make this shit up, but it was real and it was actually pretty fucking funny even though asinine.

If you're also referring to men as "males" at the same time, it's fine. Otherwise, yeah, it's a bit iffy.
