i work in the field, we actually don't care/take notice of project sizes until towards the end of the production and if we have resources/time to bother compressing files (mainly for PC)

games are only going to get bigger so get used to it

i'd lump in textures too, 8K sizes etc. Crazy how back last generation we were using 512/1024 sizes. nowadays we create textures starting from 4K +, then obviously compress/resize them down

The awesome thing is even with Lossless Compression formats, the files still end up being huge.

But with endless improvements in storage on all formats, it's easy to store it on various physical mediums.

Heck, if Sony wanted to update Blu-Ray to a next Gen spec, they would and could.

The tech for it has been ready for quite some time and they've been holding out on us.

next gen consoles will be interesting

would push for a standard/pro version of the consoles to be 2TB of HD space depending on cost of theses HD in 1-2 years time.

but again, the ability to replace the harddrive would remain

crazy to think the next gen consoles will have a life span until 2027+ (if/when they are released in 2020)

developing for Nintendo sucks and it shows. why waste company resources to try to port current-gen games on a last-last-gen console for little return? limited power in console limits game development vision too

Now imagine how fast Next Gen Consoles would perform if they had 16 GB of Optane as a super Low Latency / High Bandwidth cache for the large Data files off of the Blu-Ray Drive that is stored between sessions for games.

Imagine how responsive / how quick level loads would be or how seamless a giant open world can easily be.

You pay a 1 time loading penalty for the game from BD-ROM -> Optane, but after the file is loaded into Optane, it's super fast.

HDD can remain for DLC / Patches / Save Files.

Even if you swap discs, the Optane data can be dumped onto HDD and reloaded once the original disc is inserted to validate the content and you would still get the quick access that you used to have.

Re: Damage Control

Yes, everything in general is getting bigger in size, but games are scaling WAY the fuck up compared to everything else. A DivX movie 15 years ago was like 700mb, and now a Blu Ray movie can be anywhere from 1gb to 4gb. Big change but not crazy (especially the 1gb). MP3s at 320 kbps are still the same because it's literally a measurement of data per time, like no more than 10mb. Sure there are more FLAC/Lossless files now that increases that to 20mb but it's not like they're the only medium to listen to music in.

A game 15 years ago was like 500mb-4gb (not every game used the entire disc space), and now they are like 50 to 100gb. Even the ratio alone of increasing 25x is absurd, but 25*4gb is huge in terms of space.

Ive got a PC in my basement with a 6GB hard drive. Its mind blowing to think about because it doesnt seem like that long ago that I was using it. I paid $900 for that thing! And I think I even used it to check GameFAQs.

My first computer ran Windows 98. The HDD was too small to fully install Baldur's Gate on it. The game is only 600MB fully installed. I still have my big box version of that game. I love it.

Edit: I got the install size wrong. Baldur's Gate was fucking massive when it was released back in the day, but not _that_ massive_.

I agree, but not because of crap internet. I love owning the things I buy. There's nothing tangible in owning 1s and 0s as a digital download.

https://imgur.com/a/pNyzcPt

This is what interests me. Seeing "213 games owned" on Steam doesn't.

All the move to digital large file sizes means is that everyone can be sloppy and lazy because there is no need to fit what you want into a finite space. These large sizes usually mean Im simply not going to purchase the game because Im not juggling memory and Im not shelling out more money so programmers can do their jobs terribly.

And the best part of having physical copies of games is you can let people borrow them! You can buy them used! Of course developers want everything digital. The biggest negative is the amount of space your library takes up. Can you imagine how much space you would need for your steam library
