With President Donald Trump poised to nominate a new Supreme Court justice in the wake of Justice Anthony Kennedys retirement, all eyes are on senators such as Maines Sen. Susan Collins, who is considered a critical vote in the confirmation process. Today, the moderate Republican came under fire after an article in Maines Portland Press Herald reported that she wont factor a nominees support for the landmark abortion-rights ruling of Roe v. Wade into her confirmation decision. Collins spokeswoman Annie Clark told the paper that Senator Collins does not apply ideological litmus tests to nominees.

Some have interpreted Collins noncommittal stance as a potential threat to Roe v. Wade, which experts believe a more conservative Supreme Court lineup could overturn. In response, Twitter users have posted photos showing theyre sending metal coat hangersa symbol of the pro-choice movement that evokes the dangers of illegal abortionsto Collins offices in Washington, DC, and Maine. More have started using the hashtag #HangersForCollins.

The rich will have no problem traveling to areas where they can get a legal, safe abortion, whether that's a different state or another country.
The coat hanger method will be for poor people.
So why would any Republican care?

They're dumb - people don't use coat hangers BECAUSE of legalization. It's the banning of abortions that cause coat hangers

People fuck. It's human nature. And sometimes accidents happen even if you take precautions.

Pretty much. Yes, unwanted pregnancies would stop being a problem if, hypothetically, everyone stopped having sex except for the purpose of procreation. As a matter of public health policy, though, that objectively doesn't work. There are mountains of evidence that abstinence-only sex ed does not help unwanted pregnancy rates (and in fact can sometimes make them worse), and continuing to preach abstinence as the only solution to unwanted pregnancies it is being willfully blind to that undeniable reality.

What does help is providing comprehensive sex ed and easy access to birth control options. Subsidized birth control is even better (there was one such pilot program in Colorado that saw a 40% reduction in unplanned pregnancy rates, which is absolutely incredible and should have prompted the entire country to adopt it immediately). People are going to have recreational sex no matter how much "you will get pregnant and die" you scream at them; what makes a difference is educating them truthfully about the risks and how to mitigate them, and providing convenient and affordable access to that mitigation.
