And it's the first time I've seen a Star Wars film period since The Force Awakens came out, which was three and a half years ago? Man, time flies.

As the film progressed, I started to find the characters' interactions more and more hilarious in light of later installments, especially when it came to Han & Leia. Also RIP Peter Cushing. An unassuming start to the career of one of the most iconic movie villains ever as Vader was basically a big black right hand to Governor Tarkin.

"For the first time in four years" you say as if that's a long time. I don't think I've seen it in like 15 years.

Force Awakens came out in 2015

You've only missed 2 spin offs and one main line entry

yea, saying 4 years isn't that impressive

Oh sorry.

It's just that it has been the longest amount of time I've gone without seeing it in the past 10 years. The stupid thing is that I'm not even a huge Star Wars fan: I had been TRYING to become one for years for whatever dumb reason.

It just seemed interesting to revisit the film after so long, at least by my standards.

BTW "unfortunately" I'm stuck with the 2004 DVDs, but TBH none of the Special Edition changes bother me much. The Jabba scene may be redundant, but at least it's kind of nice to see the other ideas George had in store. The Special Edition changes would probably get A LOT less backlash if the original cuts were still available, but it seems like it's primarily purists who take issue with this. Then again I'm not watching the version that photoshops Han dodging Greedo's shot so... (that's still a cool scene BTW, reminiscent of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly)

Although given how little Mr. Lucas seemed to acknowledge the franchise's adult fans (many of whom probably grew up on the saga), I have to wonder why Star Wars fans are only now complaining about Lucasfilm not caring about the fans. The part about the media attacking SW fans for being racist/sexist/whatever else is idiotic, but unfortunately a bunch of idiots doing stupid stuff like creating de-feminized edits and harassing non-white cast members online just ended up painting a massive target on the franchise's fandom's back. Perhaps people complaining about SJWs forcing an agenda isn't helping matters.

It's just so weird, like all the bad will towards the prequels was suddenly erased by The Last Jedi. I know lol Rotten Tomatoes and all, but how on Earth does such a highly-acclaimed film get met with this much backlash? Although I get the feeling it's more of a mob mentality amongst a VERY vocal minority since people who like The Last Jedi are hardly difficult to find.

There's a reason I knocked it off! The same stupid thing happened with The Lord of the Rings, there was once a point where I tried watching the trilogy once a year from 2011-2013 and I never really got into it...then I suddenly felt like watching the films again in 2016 and really enjoyed them. Sometimes giving things a break works wonders.

I returned to Star Wars because I was fresh off of watching the Indiana Jones films and Blade Runner. Also because I like watching movies from the '70s from time to time, although this month alone I've already watched FOUR - The Godfather, Chinatown, and Halloween were the other three. And I think I enjoyed all those films more than Star Wars. Also science fiction is my favorite movie genre.

I won't be watching The Empire Strikes Back too soon, maybe give me a month to recharge my lightsaber before I head back into combat.

i don't know why people hate the added jabba scene in ANH so much tbqh. the visual effects are wonky and boba fett looking into the camera is akward, but it's not that bad. it's not nearly as terrible as all the crap lucas added to RotJ.

I keep hearing that the first movie is the one George tampered with the most with the Special Edition. I remember the Return of the Jedi dance scene from the beginning, ye gods.

I think the problem most have with the Jabba scene is because they find it redundant. I don't think I really found it such, but I can't fault anyone who does - two scenes in a row of Han complaining about his debt? I did find it fascinating for Han to confront Jabba right afterwards but I totally understand why people would have problems with it.

The CGI looks pretty darn out-of-place in a '70s movie, but in '97 the CG probably didn't look as dated. The rest of the effects hold up much better than they have any right to in a 41-year old movie. They probably wouldn't exactly stand up to the best effects today, sure, but give me them over all the crappy CGI thrown around nowadays.

Oh yeah I didn't really have a problem with the lightsaber duel either. Would much rather watch that over the drawn-out climax of Episode 3.
