My point is that there was only a smallish group of people that really wanted Waluigi in the game and then when he was announced as just an assist trophy, those people started wahing about his exclusion which caused a ton of more people to join in on the meme and thus wanting him in the game as well.

Memes start out small and then explode. It's the same thing for Waluigi.

Everyone is making it sound like Waluigi was the MOST wanted Newcomer for Smash 5 and him being denied is such a travesty when this isn't really the case at all. The meme just blew up and is making it seem like that's the case.

This is a big one for me. Like it's one thing to not like him but people who say he's a nothing character compared to Mario of all people is super strange. Like, Mario is iconic as all hell, but he has less personality than Mickey Mouse, and that's saying something.

The first Wario Land game doesnt really feature any of this, but it all starts off in Wario Land 2. In the Wario Land 2 promotional page for abilities, Wario states: My cute butt is all burnt! Its definitely not because my fart caught on fire, though.

People just tend to act like Sakurai randomly made Wario fart and stuff in Brawl out of nowhere, when that's how he's been marketed in Japan since he was created. US focused on the greed, Japan focused on making him clumsy and gross.

Hell, in Japan, Wario Land 4 came with poop stickers.

People have always known him to be gross, they hate the Flanderization of the grossness. That's a legitimate complaint how they made up most of his moves in Brawl (and even took away his only Wario Land move in Sm4sh) instead of using the source material of Wario Land which gives him a lame image to a wide public instead of being known for the his macho heavyweight abilities or his enemy reaction transformations that made people him popular in the first place.

You also seem to be getting the wrong idea about my thoughts on the matter. I never said Waluigi was never talked about or was unpopular. I thought it was pretty clear that I was insinuating that he wasn't among the MOST talked about characters or MOST wanted. I'm talking like top 3 here.

Sure Waluigi could make top 10 or I could even see an argument for top 5 but to say that he was by far and away the most wanted Newcomer for Smash 5 is completely wrong. And that's what I'm getting at. By how much people are out there crying and posting tons of memes about him, you'd think that nearly everyone wanted him as a newcomer before this whole Waluigi meme thing started gathering steam and that's really not the case.

I don't know why my stance here is so hard to understand.

Are we going to have as huge outcries if King K Rool doesn't make it in, or if Rex / Pyra combo doesn't happen? Are we going to get K Rool memes that take over the internet?

The answer is no because they aren't as meme worthy. Even though if I asked 100 people BEFORE smash 5 was announced, you can be sure both of those characters would be on more people's requested list than Waluigi.

TL:DR - I'm not saying he's not popular enough. I'm saying that the meme has pushed his requested levels ten fold of what they were before he was announced as an assist trophy again.

I was curious so I went to a topic on the Smash Ultimate boards to see what people's most requested newcomers were (Before the direct). Across around 80ish? posts these were some of the highest scorers.

I will agree that there's the argument that all of this has started only because Waluigi was confirmed as an AT while characters like King K. Rool and Decidueye still have a chance at being playable. But the fact that Bomberman was even close to Waluigi (even ahead) in terms of people wanting him playable is actually probably the biggest thing.

Who says I'm not happy? I'm SUPER stoked that Ridley is finally playable. This is probably the most excited I've been for a smash game in ages.
