Since it's just a first step, the legislation can still be stopped or amended, right? I'm not familiar with the EU legislative process, but plenty of bills die or are severely altered after leaving a committee here in the US.

The state of the EU just gets more sad every day.

First it was unchecked mass migration then it was punishing anyone that criticized the mass migration then it was arresting people for making fun of nazis and now FOR SOME REASON (actually we know the reason why it's because Germany can't fucking help itself for one goddamned moment and not try to rule all of Europa) they have decided to adopt China's internet because reasons.

Way to fucking go EU and you all wonder why we "savage/uncivilized" Americans want to keep our guns.

This has been covered elsewhere in written form too. The legislation would require that all content uploaded to the internet be checked for copyright violations, with websites being liable if anything slips through. It's unclear if attempts at automatically detecting and censoring other types of content will be undertaken. Fees for linking to news stories (and other content?) is also a part of it.

How is that even possible? Not everyone has YouTube's resources and even then, shit slips through YouTube all the damn time.

It's what big media companies want. Some have also suggested that politicians in the EU may favor restricting speech in general, but I don't know enough about EU politics to offer an comment on that possibility. Also, politicians rarely care if something is possible or makes sense.

It's a dumb rule. I've e-mailed my regional MEPs about it.

It's obviously a stupid rule made by people who don't really understand how these things work but at this stage it's difficult to comment when it's so murky how this will actually operate or whether it will pass at all.
