It's a dumb rule. I've e-mailed my regional MEPs about it.

That's actually pretty cool that you're taking the initiative. Most people, not just on the internet are reluctant to do so for things they believe in.
How much do you think your regional MEPs can help though?

Right wing and Left wing mean completely different things over there but make no mistake both the EU and the UK are very much what we would call left wing.

@Hexenherz

1. Elimination of fair use.

2. Death of privacy. If software must scan everything that is uploaded to a server in the EU, a great deal of privacy simply vanishes immediately.

3. There is no mechanism for redressing complaints. They just assume businesses will act in good faith when there are false positives.

4. It just won't work like it's supposed to. There is no database anywhere in the world of "all the copyrighted content", and no existing software comes close to doing what the relevant article would demand. Because the companies hosting content are the ones liable, this may well change the shape of the internet as we know it.

5. It's logical to assume that once the system is in place to check for copyright violations (no matter how poorly it works), it will be expanded to other things like illegal speech, images, etc. The effect on free speech would be huge, and do you really want an automated system looking at everything you put online to see if it's illegal? It'll be just lovely getting a knock on the door for uploading something benign that got flagged mistakenly by the (almost certain to be shitty) software.

6. Expanding on #5, even if you assume amazing software will be developed that won't make mistakes, and even if you assume law enforcement will do their due diligence and check to make sure you actually did something wrong, what's legal and what isn't changes over time. Once the system is in place for copyright, it'll be expanded to illegal content and speech. All that's left is for more and more political ideologies to be deemed "hateful", and both democracy and free thought in the EU will be well and truly dead.

7. The EU passing this kind of legislation sets a precedent that will sooner or later be followed elsewhere in the world.

Yes. Such thing will never pass, despite being supported by the Commission. The EU Commission is where all the GAFA went with suitcases full of money to actively lobby in favour of this literal censorship. This is why the Commission supported it. But it turns out that the Parliament is actually made of sane members, not on the payroll of those cancerous companies. And the Parliament has the final word. Freedom of speech and me making memes based on random images will carry on :]

And thank fuck.

It was a really odd thing to be pushing, given the recent changes in data privacy laws that finally came into law. But was sad to see so much support behind it, given just how poorly implemented it was given no consideration to places without google levels of money.

Still though, it is just going back for amendments, so they will be pushing for it again in due course and given that still many, many voted FOR it originally, can't rest now.

So, the internet in Europe essentially exists as a means for the government to monitor, censor, and remove anybody whose opinions dont match those of the agenda being pushed?

Sounds kind of like a communist regime, hmm?

I think it's a lot simpler than that : there isn't much to say to such a stupid conclusion, so arguing with that inane statement will not make you see the inanity of it. The chap simply doesn't want to waste time on it, me thinks.

I'm not familiar with EU politics as a whole, but I'd read that every part of this bill besides the two problematic articles was fine and that updating copyright law was going to get done regardless. So, maybe they actually want some time to excise the evil and then pass it? I'd like to believe that.

May I ask where your optimism comes from? Not many EU citizens chimed in on any forum I visited, and here in the US, I was quite nervous that it might have a chance.
