I've seen people get super mad and frustrated over long lines, usually blaming it on the clerks. Some people swear they have no idea what the issue is and if they could check out themselves it would faster. Boy were these people wrong. Every time I go to a store with self-check out lines they are ALWAYS backed the fuck up with a bunch of idiots who don't know what they are doing.

A lot of things get backed up because of your average moron.

People blame all sorts of stuff, but really the problem is that the average human is just not that smart. Theyre terrible. Its so hard to be a philanthropist.

The problem with self-checkout lines comes with items that dont have bar codes.
If it doesnt have a bar code, what do you do?
You have to fiddle around with the computer, and no one who uses a self-checkout line wants to do that. They want to be in and out.

Now, the ignorant will argue, well, dont get something without a barcode then
Sorry. I like apples. It should not be complicated get to get a bag of apples from a store.

It's not complicated. You select produce, select the type of apples, and place them on the scanner to be weighed.

All of the ones I've been to have an employee overseeing 4-6 self checkout stations, and if anyone has an issue like this the light blinks and the employee comes over

Kinda defeats the purpose though right? If you dunno WTF you doing and will most likely need a clerk then go to a line with a clerk already. I understand if the machine malfunctions but come on.

especially where I live
the computers are so damn slow
getting a bag of zukini takes forever because you have to first hit the scan produce button
then you wait for it to get to the next screen
then you select the produce you are buying from their long list which takes forever to scroll through
then you wait for the next screen again
then you type in how many you are buying
wait for the next screen
then you weigh it
then it finally gets registered as a purchased item

compare that to just taking a barcode and scanning it.

if the average age is below 50 and there are zero children it is a good line, no matter how long.

Possibly my biggest pet peeve. Digging in your pocketbook or wallet for-fucking-ever so you can avoid getting a dime back. The cashier has a drawer full of fucking sorted change, give them the extra dollar and deal with the shit.

Most people don't require assistance, some people do, but at the end of the day it's still 1 employee manning 4-6 registers so I don't think it really defeats the purpose

The only time I don't use self check out is when I'm buying beer, medicine that requires an ID check like nyquil, etc

My grocery store has 10 self check out kiosks and usually one clerk...it takes way too long if I have to wait for them to check my ID

I usually avoid self-checkout lines because they are taking away people's jobs. I know it's going to happen anyway, but for me it's the principle.

Not by much depending on the quality of the scanner lol.

The codes for produce are like 4 or 5 numbers, hit keypad and type it in.

Apples and quite a few other popular fruits and veggies are right there on the first screen to tap. Its really not hard at all.

I worked customer service for a long time so its no surprise to me that most people are pretty dumb.

That's all commissaries, the BX sometimes don't check...they really check.when you try and buy liquor or tobacco

The self checkouts at my work are better than most because they don't yell at the person for removing items from the bagging area or skipping bagging too many times. The main problem is people who are too dumb to hit "Pay Now" before inserting their credit card into the card reader which confuses the machine and then it takes a good 1-2 minutes for it to fix itself. The other problem is that card readers should be universal so all machines it is the same button for credit. I probably have to tell customers a couple hundred times a day that it is the red cancel button for credit.
