These things are designed by idiots

"Place item in bag"
*Puts it in*
"Unexpected item in bagging area, please remove item"
*Takes it out*
"Item removed from bagging area, please place item in bagging area"
*Puts it in*
"Unexpected item in bagging area, please remove item"
*Takes it out*
"Item removed from bagging area, please place item in bagging area"
*Presses place in cart*
"Please wait for an attendant to assist"

Self checkouts are slower and less efficient. They are also bloated with unnecessary steps. The cashier system is shit on them. Basically if you don't have the laziest/dumbest cashier in the store, the cashier will be faster every time. The question is whether the line to them is long, because stores are now only keeping like 2 cashiers and using self checkouts for the rest.

It's not a self check-out line when there's one person overlooking all the scumbags trying to steal. Even on the military base the self check-out has people watching you

They even check your military IDs. At least, the one I shop at always checks IDs. They don't mess around.

That's all commissaries, the BX sometimes don't check...they really check.when you try and buy liquor or tobacco

Yeah, I've gotten away with not being checked for my ID at the BX. It may be because I interact with the same employee every time though.

This topic is hilarious, I've never had problems with self checkout and rarely seen people gumming up the line because they can't figure it out. Shit is so much better than traditional checkout.

another problem with self-checks is when idiots have like 50 items when they're clearly meant for like 10 at most

Self check out is perfect if you have like 3 items. They bug out over nothing most of the time.

Items can be too light, bulky stuff you put on the ground ( cat litter ) upsets it etc.

This. If you have more stuff than what will fit in the 1 by 2 foot bagging area you might as well not even bother.

The ones in my area are glorious. Took something out of the bagging area? Great.
Skipped bagging? W/e man, you do you. Time to pay, oh just slide your card and it runs it right from the scanning screen with no delays? Don't have to prime it for 45 seconds, it just pays and prints? Glorious.

Self-checkout machines have to weigh merchandise one at a time, to try to prevent customers from cheating. This slows down things a bit. I scan my items and pay for them fast enough, but that weighing step is what slows me down. Cashiers don't have to do that shit, except when items are sold by weight.

Unless I have alcohol I always do self checkout. Theres rarely a line and I can do it faster than the kid being paid to do it.

It's not complicated. You select produce, select the type of apples, and place them on the scanner to be weighed.

You live in one of those stupid areas, boy?

or, you could just input the code:

Imagine not realizing that the PLU code for produce is right there on the sticker.

Thing is, I expect people doing a job all day to be better at it than someone only coming in every week or 2.

varies by clerk, time of day, and other customers. I find I'm faster most of the time save the once or twice the machine hated the weight of the chicken I bought.

Walmart near me goes to nothing but self checkout at like 10:30-11:00pm. It fuckin blows cause theres people doing a weeks worth of grocery shopping and theres only like 3 open.

And whenever Im buying alcohol I just tap the person working there when I start walking towards the register.

I think everyone should work in a supermarket or retail for 3 months so people then would maybe understand, it's usually not the clerks fault for long lines

I've seen people get super mad and frustrated over long lines, usually blaming it on the clerks. Some people swear they have no idea what the issue is and if they could check out themselves it would faster. Boy were these people wrong. Every time I go to a store with self-check out lines they are ALWAYS backed the fuck up with a bunch of idiots who don't know what they are doing.

At the Walmart I worked at, it was mandatory to always have the smokeshop line open. If that meant selfcheckout had to be closed so a noncashier can watch the door, so be it.
