With that principle in mind, we've decided that the right approach is to allow everything onto the Steam Store, except for things that we decide are illegal, or straight up trolling. Taking this approach allows us to focus less on trying to police what should be on Steam, and more on building those tools to give people control over what kinds of content they see. We already have some tools, but they're too hidden and not nearly comprehensive enough. We are going to enable you to override our recommendation algorithms and hide games containing the topics you're not interested in. So if you don't want to see anime games on your Store, you'll be able to make that choice. If you want more options to control exactly what kinds of games your kids see when they browse the Store, you'll be able to do that. And it's not just players that need better tools either - developers who build controversial content shouldn't have to deal with harassment because their game exists, and we'll be building tools and options to support them too.

aka we're giving up. You figure it out.

Bravo, Steam. This is the kind of thing that needs to be seen more, not just in gaming, but it all kinds of media. Allow content creators more freedom to push the boundaries (to a certain limit) but also allow the audience more freedom to filter out what they don't want themselves (or their children, family, etc.) to have to see. That offensive game won't offend you if you never see it in the store or even find out it exists, right? So why should the game's creators or the people who aren't offended by it have to suffer?

I'm glad Steam decided not to become the morality police and is instead letting the individuals censor the games on their own store page rather than for everyone else as well.

This is awful for the actual content creators though. What used to be a good bet for new developers to start off on is now too hard to really try anything new with. More and more devs are jumping to other platforms such as gmg or even the switch, as steam is just too bloated now.

Good.

Let creators put what they want on the market place and give the consumers more and better tools to filter out what they probably aren't interested in.

I hear a lot of gaming writers are a bit mad about this choice though.

We purchased a copy of it sometime late last year, I suspect if it was going to disappear, it would've done so by that point, as it first came to light several years back now.

It was booted for like a few days shortly before it was released, then the decision was overturned and it launched normally.

In the short term, we won't be making significant changes to what's arriving on Steam until we've finished some of the tools we've described in this post.

considering some games I've seen pretty much outright say in their description that they're trolling, there's certainly some out there that it's obvious. which I assume is the only ones they'll really bother with
