They're not inherently bad, the issue is that they were blatantly being passed with the hope that they would suppress people who voted Democrat.

Because if you aren't finding a way to easily provide the IDs to people it is inconvenience people who might not have the transportation/time to go get one, which disproportionately affects lower income voters.

It's a combination of factors:
- voting fraud isn't a problem in the US; anyone who suggests that millions of illegals vote in elections are ****ing idiots, no exceptions
- places that issue IDs have a 'mysterious' tendency to reduce hours around election time, but only in areas with large minority populations(who traditionally vote with the Democratic Party)
- it's often coupled with a tendency for polling places to be less numerous in those same areas, leading to waiting times of 4 hours or more just to cast a ballot
- it's essentially a form of "poll tax" because all such valid forms of ID must be bought

At it's core, it's a method to suppress voter groups who tend to not vote for the 'Magic R'. See also: Roy Moore of Alabama claiming illegal voters stole the election from him because black voters overrode the 75% of white males who voted the 'Better a Child Predator Than a Democrat' ticket. :P

Because in pretty much every state they are enacted in it's entirely for the purpose of suppressing poor and minority voters. Republicans have even admitted as much.

Until voter IDd are free and automatically given to all people eligible to vote theyll be dumb as shit.

This

The entire argument makes no sense.

"WE need IDs to stop voter Fraud because Fraud is such a big issue that it is ruining fair elections."
"Cool so are you going to make IDs free and easily accessible?"
"No who cares? It's not a big deal."

The argument makes no sense.

It's just based on "Hey Billy Joe who doesn't have or need an ID is not going to take a day out of his life and pay up to $90 just to vote, so we stop him from voting." and that's bad, it's an inch away from a poll tax.

It's a shame that ID laws are an effective method of voter suppression. I don't support any law not made in good faith so I don't support the GOPs effort to push voter ID laws, but ultimately I don't care.

It depressing enough either way. I just wish people cared about civic duty and people get could their fucking lives together to not be easily disenfranchised by simply laws made to protect democracy.

Voter ID Laws aren't a bad idea. But there are two issues with enacting them currently.

1) While the Voter ID Laws themselves are fine the rely on our currently broken ID system. Getting IDs is demonstratively more difficult for lower-class demographics as IDs cost money (not a ton, but for some people it means the difference between eating that day or not) and more significantly require you to go to place like DMVs. DMVs often have terrible hours that make it difficult for people who have to work all day to find time to get there and often located far away from lower-class population centers. Which means on top of needing to take off work to go to the DMV, they also have to arrange some sort of transportation to get there, which isn't always easy if you don't have a car. A good law that relies on a broken system is a broken law.

2) The people who continually push for voter ID laws are aware of point number 1 and directly benefit from the fact that fewer of that demographic would be voting. Which means they want to enact the law not because of what it would be meant to do, but because of a side-effect. Which is just super shitty.
