In the largest disturbance yet in Disney's otherwise lucrative reign over "Star Wars," the Han Solo spinoff "Solo: A Star Wars Story" opened well below expectations with a franchise-low $83.3 million in ticket sales over the three-day weekend in North American theaters.

Disney estimated Sunday that "Solo" will gross $101 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, a figure below even the opening weekends of the much-derided "Star Wars" prequels. Last week, forecasts ran as high as $150 million for the four-day haul of "Solo."

Overseas ticket sales were even worse. "Solo," starring Alden Ehrenreich in the role made iconic by Harrison Ford, grossed $65 million internationally in its opening weekend, including a paltry $10.1 million in China...

Can't speak for other locations, but in my area tickets were nowhere near being sold out for any of the showings. The previous Star Wars movies and Marvel movies always do pretty much sell out here for the first few nights.

It's really weird just how triggered some people are getting over Solo.

This dude keeps popping up on my recommend on Youtube for some reason, and I thought it was just the same video being recommended over and over but it turns out he makes 2-3 videos about how much of a flop Solo is going to be a day

Some days he also throws in a live stream or two

I think this is also Disney movie/marvel movie fatigue.

Casuals see infinity wars. Then Deadpool. Obviously that's a fox movie but casuals aren't paying attention. They just see it as a marvel movie. Then a star wars movie. It was a lot of stuff released in a short span.

The only reason The Last Jedi did as well as it did is due to fans wanting to see Luke Skywalker. Once they saw what Kathleen Kennedy did to Luke, it pretty much imploded the Star Wars brand.

A Han Solo movie actually could have been really fucking cool if the old EU Han Solo books were anything to gauge things by. No stupid force shit, just Han flying around in space doing space opera shit like it was some higher tech version of Firefly.

Maybe they thought they can use Infinity War and Deadpool 2 as reasons because falling short when your competition is Aquaman would be more embarrassing.

its surprising for the film to have not done the business as we have hoped Its disappointing when tracking is unpredictable when you get to levels like this and setting up expectations outside of where the film is landing. But, we come into a Memorial Day thats doing a ton of business for the industry, and the last four weeks have been the biggest.

Its great for the business. Sure, Deadpool 2 jumping in front of the release and how available people turned out this weekend are factors, but with Solo we have a film thats well received with great exits, and we have nothing in front of us for two weekends. Well measure the success of Solo at its finish.

Normally a debut of over $100 million would rank as a roaring success, but there are reasons that folks on the Disney lot may be starting to sweat. After all, this is one of the most storied film franchises in movie history; a premium brand with few equals. Moreover, its not an ideal start for a film with a budget over $250 million, and its a launch that potentially means that this installment could fall short of previous films in the series, most of which end their runs with over $1 billion globally.

When the bar is set this high, theres a lot of Chicken Little [syndrome] going on, box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian said of reports already labeling the newest Star Wars installment as a flop. Thats not the case, but when you have a franchise thats been this successful, any misstep becomes a big deal....

...When you have fans that are that religiously enthusiastic about the Star Wars property, any change can cause a shift in the force, he said. Star Wars fans have a high standard of what they expect. The type of things that most audiences wouldnt really care that much about, Star Wars fans care about it.

With the bar for success set in the billions of dollars, it was only a matter of time until a new Star Wars movie stumbled. But perhaps Solos opening weekend gross doesnt mean disaster for Lucasfilm instead it could be an opportunity to look at smaller movies for this cash-flush franchise.

It may be time to start reframing the anthology movies not as lucrative standalone flicks for legacy characters (a Boba Fett adventure is also in the works), but as rare opportunities to break out of their own cumbersome canon. However, Lucasfilm may not be ready to deviate too far from the Star Wars look and feel to keep directors like Lord and Miller employed.

The Star Wars films of the past five years have attracted notable directors, including J.J. Abrams (The Force Awakens, Episode IX), Gareth Edwards (Rogue One), Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi), and Ron Howard (Solo). But theyve also battled a perception of being filmmaker-unfriendly. Kennedys team brought in Tony Gilroy to oversee reshoots on Rogue One and Lord and Miller reportedly ran afoul of management by employing too much of an improvisational spin on the material. Solo may be a sign that audiences want something fresh, but that can only happen with buy-in from the top.

Its become obvious theres problems within Lucasfilm, Bock said. You dont see that in a lot of big name franchises. There is something thats not working....

Yeah the film didn't really have bad press so much as no press. They hype just wasn't there. I'm sure partially it's because it's only been six months since the last Star Wars movie so there just wasn't time for any hype to build. And I'm sure part of it is because nobody was really asking for a Solo origin story with a dude who isn't Harrison Ford. And I'm sure part of it is that Disney was clearly more focused on getting Infinity Wars maximum market saturation. Regardless of the factors it just didn't have the buzz that even Rogue One had. Despite being a perfectly decent movie.
