most people cannot enjoy the second one because they are, understandably, turned off by the second one's dated flaws (though not nearly as bad as Mother 1 as I hear)

so if you muscled your way through 1, then you're gonna love 2

The first game has good writing and music, thats it. The gameplay experience is not well-balanced, in multiple ways

I think it was bad for its time too. Like I enjoyed the NES versions of all three FF games, but not this. Ugly, slow, frustrating difficulty spikes, grindy af, obtuse. Fun aesthetic and offbeat story/characters though. Has potential in a sequel that can just be a normal game on top of the creativity.

I will say it was a lot of fun understanding so many references from the Smash Bros. series though.

Even not being the game with Ness or Lucas in it, it's still really formative for the Earthbound feel.

There's just a lot of nothing in Mother 1. Long, drawn out maps with little in them and no reason to actually explore anything.

I definitely rushed through the train tunnel with 4th-d slip to recruit Ana before the stupid factory.

Earthbound is like a refined version of Mother. Mother 3 has some of the quirks and humor but is infinitely more serious and depressing.

I'm a huge Mother fan, but Mother 1 is terrible. It doesn't earn the excuse of being dated either, there are NES RPGs that are miles better.

The only good things about it is the music, and its originality, but Earthbound blows it out of the water.

I had way harder of a time on Itoi.

Ninten was level 20 before I even got to Loid. I also didn't know there was any defense raising equipment in the game until I was basically done.

Finding the single completely unmarked tile with a landmine and message from Shigesato Itoi is pretty good though

Earthbound really requires a walkthrough to complete, but it's so worth it.

Why would it need a walkthrough? Its pretty straightforward usually.

I could maybe understand that claim for the first game, though Im sure a good number of people did it without help.

You can potentially skip over some of the Sound Spots throughout the game, the second one most notably. You can also get stuck if you don't realize one of the Mr. Saturns is giving you legit progression instructions. Bonus that if you don't talk to him it doesn't work at all.
