I always knew it was a bad game, with weird controls, but I never realize how genuinely unplayable it is. You have to escort the words dumbest AI all to the same place on the map, the camera system is super tedious and shoehorned in, killing zombies doesn't actually matter because no matter how much you thin them out there's still thousands randomly spawning down a hallway (although maybe if you kill all 50k they stop spawning?)

The difficulty never feels fun, it's either "oh I know what to do so it's super easy" or "oh I don't know what to do so it's almost impossible."

Does dead rising 2 fix any of these issues?

I know DR2 fixes a lot of the issues, and I think a lot of DR1 has to do with remembering where stuff is. It's important to know that it's built (for better or worse) for cumulative runs, because your stats carry over after you die.

Yeah Dead Rising is very much meant to be attempted multiple times. Like it's possible to beat it on a completely fresh start but you need to know the game like the back of your hand or you're going to have a miserable time. By the time you've been playing for a while Frank basically becomes a god.

You are totally correct, DR1 is extremely flawed.

AI is god awful, weapons don't last long, its super frustrating, controls are weird (wasn't it a 360 launch title?)

It becomes super rewarding once you start learning all of the nuances of the game, learning weapon\item placements, the best routes, etc

but its all stopped because of how weak Frank is

so basically, the game doesn't start becoming decent until hes like on level 30+

if you try to do everything right off the bat, when you first start, it won't work.
You're not strong enough, you can't hold enough items for the job, you don't have the necessary moves or health, and you don't know where everything is

it can't happen. It never will. I tried doing that when I first played, so I know from experience it is impossible

So basically your first few playthroughs is you getting used to the game and map.

It becomes rewarding once you learn to beat the game at it's own...well, game.
But I also understand it might not be worth the aggravation.

The game is hard for all of the wrong reasons. Its all technical shit thats wrong with it.

DR2 seriously fixes almost everything.
Some weirdos out there might say it became too easy, but it really just became more fun

But for now, give it a few more goes. Save everytime you die and start over. Explore. Let the story missions run out, nothing urgent. Save as many people as you can but don't frustrate yourself.

Once you think you're ready,t hen you go for the real run

You'll start getting used to it

A few tips

Its possible to earn the real mega buster before even beating the game once. Its that kill 50k achievement. Err, I understand you're struggling to even play the game and this is the 2nd most tedious task in the game, but then you can cheese the game afterwards, and frank will be max level once you do it. I don't really recommend doing this but its an option >_>. You have to run over zombies over and over for 3 in game days under the mall to get this. ....forget I mentioned it

When you beat adam, The Clown, his Small chainsaw will be where he died. You can pick it up, leave and come back, and pick up an other one. It is the BEST Melee weapon in the game. It chops up Bosses in seconds. When its about to break, you can give it to survivors. Weapons last longer when they have them so they'll get the best use out of it.

when escorting survivors, you can't just tell them to go across the mall or have them follow you without commands. They're too dumb for that, they will literally get caught in trees and shit.
You'll have to do it step by step. When you're in "Behind the Shoulder" Mode, I think if you hit Y, you actually can set up a check point and they'll run to it. So set small goals. Make them run down the hall, or to every other store. Nothing too big that their puny minds can't handle it. Also, if you arm them, don't mix and match guns and melee. They'll kill each other.

IIRC An Uzi pretty much spawns in every area, so you'll need to find those out. I haven't played DR1 in ages so I can't recall them at the moment

In the first area, when you leave the safehouse, upstairs, theres a juice bar that has infinite juice and a blender. you can make different kinds of juices there. I don't recall the recipes but these are your god send and they offer power ups. You can mix one called Quickstep which makes Frank run faster or theres one where he takes less damage. Just keep in mind that survivors can't drink mixed juices. Also if you jump off the balcony, you'll find a katana.

Even though its a Joke, fan service move, The spinning lariat is probably Frank's best move

it clears crowds

I actually recall the first Carlitos fight to be impossible in the beginning

Frank's strength is low, so that means firearms don't do damage, Carlitos is shooting at you from a distance, you only have a handgun, and your health is only a few squares, and aiming is super slow

probably the most frustrating thing ever

in later playthroughs you can just bumrush him, take the shots as you're running to him and beat him to death IIRC

This is basically where I ended up stuck.

I would just explore and look around and do everything I could on each consecutive try until I could kill him.

Like, you learn where to get OJ for easy healing, and that helped me most of anything else honestly. You learn where to get better weapons, best paths, among other thing. I feel like by the time you get savvy there and can beat Carlito, you are set and ready for the rest of the game.

This is encouraging since I found it quite easy. I can get him with the pistol consistently now, but my first try gad me throwing cans of soda, which made for a very rewarding kill.

OTR is so much better than vanilla DR2 that it's not even funny, holy cow.

Being able to just give yourself Zombrex instead of running it back to Katie is G-A-M-E C-H-A-N-G-E-R.

I don't necessarily mind Chuck as a character but definitely the worst move they did with the series (aside from DR4 in general) was changing the main character from Frank.

And I don't even really count DR4 Frank as the same character because he's terrible there.

I am Willing to admit I actually think Chuck is the better character and has way better motives

OTR IS better in the way that its basically DR2 Turbo, it fixed a bunch of big things and small things you wouldn't have even thought about

but I dunno, most of the game IS the same. You pretty much have to play either or

Well a gave it another shot, and it didn't go so badly.

Managed to rescue everyone, killed the psychos in the car in the park (only to find out they just respawn) Killed the clown, got two of his chainsaws, learned the secret passage from greg, and saved right before rescuing the japanese tourists, I gave them a chainsaw and katana, but they still couldn't manage to make it down the stairs so thats fun.

I'm elevating my rating of this game from "unplayable trash" to "trash"

I believe the specific number (53k something) is supposed to represent the number of the population of the city that the game takes place in, but I think it's symbolic only.

Fun fact, Valve one-upped this in Left 4 Dead. In Dead Rising the number is 53,594; in Left 4 Dead there's an achievement for killing 53,595 zombies.
