I grew up in the poorest city in Massachusetts and the 15th poorest city in America.

Over the last 13 years ive gone from working at a sub shop, to a bakery, to a department store, to an entry level office job, to a slightly better office job, to a much better office job, to an even better office job and now im here.

When they handed me those keys I started sobbing like a little girl.

People ITT are unemotional or don't know what it's like to be crazy poor.

As with all things though, this is the internet, so skepticism is healthy. If it did happen, congratulations TC.

No offense but the biggest key to that is youre single and without kids since its a lot easier to save in that situation. But yeah, it is funny how my office job is entirely predicated on my community college coursework and has literally nothing to do with my fancy 4 year degree.

That said I bet TC has debt of some sort (student loans, car payments; mortgage at least).

Ugh, you probably have no intentions of ever leaving your job or town, so it makes sense. It doesnt make sense for a person like me to get locked in a mortgage because Im single and Im an opportunist when it comes to jobs.

It's not as hard to sell a house as you think, as long as you're not stupid about. I've moved out of a house quicker than some have gotten out of an apartment.

Put in a little work on your spare time to improve it, price it competitively... I've moved... three times, two of those being to different states, and have typically sold my house in a week give or take.

Edit: Well, financing hold ups are a bitch, but still. Not terrible on time.

Easier said then done plus if I were to get a job offer in lets say Seattle or maybe I just wanted to move to Seattle, all I would need to do is either wait out a remaining year lease or buy it out.

For me its 100% about who I work with and for, not what I do.

My job is pretty mundane and boring but my team and boss are amazing and were like a little family, so I enjoy going there every day because we make boring work fun.

And plus my job is how I earn money for the part of my life that matters which is everything before and after work. To me, people who base their lives around their careers are the depressing ones.

Youre talking pass each other.

Either the work is satisfying.
Or the people are.

Youre going to be miserable if the work you do you dont enjoy AND you have no bond with coworkers.

Some jobs suck while also limiting coworker interactions. Some office jobs are nonstop calls with little time to converse for example. The job sucks, and the job limits any potential enjoyment. I think thats the stigma people have of office jobs.

A negative work environment makes a negative life in general. Its great you seem to have a good group at your job. That really helps.

It must suck to have to live in an area thats so undesirable. I bought my home in 2015. I am up about 40% in value over what I paid for it and it would be under contract in a couple of weeks if I decided to sell.

Well if you didn't get suckered into wasting 5-6 years of your life in college racking up 80k in debts (plus like 200-400 grand in opportunity cost) and without a woman leeching all your money, or worse, kids.

It wouldn't be that unimaginable to see even a guy working at mcdonalds having his own place if he's not a drug addict/alcoholic/gambler.
