Gohan was supposed to be the protag, but they kinda torpedoed his character because Goku/Vegeta popularity. His power up was to basically put him ahead of those two without needing to transform.

Also of those, most DBZ fans started with Z so the only one they likely care about is Piccolo.

Boruto has the same issue as well. I could tell they have good plans for boruto but the fans get in the way.

Honestly, if Gohan had a legitimate rival, he'd probably have taken the seat as protagonist and Goku/Vegeta a backseat. Gohan's biggest issue is he never really had anyone to play off of. Goten/Trunks were a thing, but Gohan was just kinda there. He had his struggle with pacifism/protection, but after that his character had nowhere to go. His buildup to SSJ2 was kinda ruined by how bad the Buu saga was in general.

But yeah, all Gohan needed was his variant of Vegeta and he could've gone places, but he's kind of a dud now.
