My LGBT character ranking 2 ended up getting only a small handful of responses before purging, so that kind of fell through

@My_Immortal While I do like Connor a lot I legitimately think Oliver is one of my favorite gay characters on TV now. About 2/3 of the way through S4 right now and he has consistently been the best (followed by Connor and Asher probably)

few little ideas I've tossed around in my head:

-Daily vote project where each day there's a new character trope and people vote on who the best example of that trope is. There was a project like that run here years ago (which was less about tropes and more about things like "best bald character") that was pretty cool

-General photoshop request topic, where people could say things they'd want to see (dumb movie posters, pictures, etc.) and I'd just kind of choose my favorites and try to make them. I was real hyped for this for a while but then this past month I've started developing what I'm pretty sure is carpal tunnel in my hand, so I can't guarantee how much I could do with that

-Considered bringing back the B8 Aquarium, but same issue as above (but worse because holding a tablet pen really makes my hand ache)

-Bracket tournament for movie songs, kind of like how we have all the VGM ones. Songs specifically recorded for movies (either as scores or as part of the soundtrack for things like musicals). Disney songs would probably be banned, mostly because then it would just become a contest of "which Disney song is the best?"

-Maybe a 40 favorite video game character ranking. Someone else on the board did that and it was really cool so I'd basically be copying them but whatever

Don't really feel like making this a poll so just let me know what you guys think, or if there's anything else you'd like to see.

One question I want to pose with the movie song bracket too:

Should it be limited to just songs written specifically for movies or also include songs prominently associated with a movie (ex. "The Touch" for Transformers: The Movie, "A Real Hero" for Drive, "Born to be Wild" for Easy Rider, etc.)? I think I'd be leaning in favor of them.

Oh so I did actually find the old LGBT 2 nominations. I'll just run through real quick thoughts on the characters I know enough to talk about:

Connor and Oliver (How To Get Away With Murder)

Went into this a bit in the first post, but I'll just touch on it quick again. Connor and Asher were my favorites pretty early on. Asher was funny and I already liked the actor from Orange is the New Black, while Connor pretty quickly struck me as likable while also pretty complicated emotionally. As the show goes on though, HTGAWM is kind of infamous for wild mood shifts with characters and constant drama, so my taste for Connor fluctuated, despite him always being one of the better characters.

Oliver is just a fucking peach and almost instantly became the most likable character on the show, and Connor & Oliver's relationship felt a hell of a lot more real than some of the others (like Wes & Laurel, Bonnie & literally anyone, etc.)

Paul "Jesus" Monroe & Aaron (The Walking Dead)

Aaron came out really strong with an awesome first appearance in S5, so I had high hopes for him going forward. He seemed like a born leader with leadership capabilities that could rival Rick's. Then he was underutilized entirely from that point forward. I also remember the insane outrage when it was revealed that he was gay. Because, you know, a man biting the throat out of another man to prevent him from raping his kid is fine, but two men kissing? Woah there, suddenly this is a family show.

Jesus I didn't even realize was gay, which makes sense, because there's really very little reason for him to be pursuing any type of romantic relationship by the time he's introduced. Just a fun, cool character for most of the time he's around (except when he suddenly decides in the middle of a raid that killing is bad because they needed dumb conflict)

Gus Fring (Breaking Bad)

Another character whose sexuality doesn't play a huge role (except for how the death of his possible lover was what drove his actions throughout the entire series). Moreso, he's just a deeply terrifying sociopath and criminal mastermind who served as one of the best TV villains of the century so far.

Undyne (Undertale)

So Undyne's relationship was kind of dumb, honestly. That's less because of her and more because Alphys is easily the most obnoxious character in the game. In my opinion the biggest draw for her was always her determination. Seeing her will herself back into existence as Undyne the Undying was fucking awesome and one of the biggest highlights of the game for me.

Jeri Hogarth (Jessica Jones)

Sorry Snake, I really never cared for Jeri. Always just struck me as off-putting, but that might be because I never really liked Carrie-Anne Moss as an actress. Just always rubs me the wrong way.

Penguin (Gotham)

Easily the highlight of the show, and 90% of what got me to keep watching during the series' weaker moments (as well as Camren Bicondova's surprisingly awesome Selina Kyle). While Penguin's role shifted back and forth for me in later seasons (I never cared for the subplot with his father's family) his S1 rise to power was to date one of the greatest things the show achieved. I never cared for the Penguin as a character before Gotham, but see him violently and craftily work his way through the crime families to be the (temporary) king of Gotham was awesome. I've only seen through S3, where it focuses on his relationship with Riddler, but honestly I always felt his relationship with Gordon was way more compelling. Penguin seems to legitimately like Jim despite Jim constantly being antagonistic toward him, whereas Jim hates what Penguin does but also recognizes that (at least at first) he was one of the villains of Gotham who was the most reasonable to deal with.

Max Caulfield & Chloe Price (Life is Strange)

If I were to run a full ranking these two would probably both manage to land around top 5. Their relationship is quite possibly my favorite relationship in all of gaming, to the point that I was more than willing to sacrifice all of Arcadia Bay to maintain what they had together. It's kind of hard to choose between the two. Chloe gets bonus points for being voiced by Ashly Burch, who I already loved going in, but Max is way easier to connect too as a character. I absolutely adore them both.

Roger Smith (American Dad!)

My enjoyment of Roger varies day to day. At his best he's one of the funniest characters on the show (most of this comes from his impossible commitment to his characters) but sometimes the writing just gets lazy and he becomes a one-note bad joke. But in a show with such a consistently funny main cast I never really end up having too much of an issue.

Tracer (Overwatch)

I am garbage at playing Tracer but I fucking love her. She's adorable and chipper and just embodies everything fun about the cast. It's really no wonder they made her the face of the game, her personality is addictive, her voice is super cute and she's fun to play even though I'm so bad at her. Reinhardt and Roadhog will always be my favorites though.

Pearl (Steven Universe)

Only saw like three episodes of SU but Pearl was the worst part of them. I hate her nose.

Stewie Griffin (Family Guy)

I know at some point I liked Stewie, but I can barely remember that time, as Family Guy just drastically sunk over the years to the point that it's hard to even think of it as a funny show. He was one of the better ones on the main cast way back when for what it's worth.

Deadpool (Marvel Comics)

It almost feels played out to be a Deadpool fan given how crazy popular he's gotten, but I'll fully admit I love the character. He's one of the few characters I went back to try and actually read the comics for (only about 40 or so issues, which left me really shipping Deadpool and Siryn). I love the fourth wall breaks, and I'm a total sucker for meta humor.

Todd Sanchez (Bojack Horseman)

The fact that there is an asexual character on a popular TV show at all is pretty astouding, because even the "progressive" shows usually draw the line with one trans character. The fact that the show about the talking horse person in a world full of bad animal puns and bestiality has become one of the most intelligent and realistic shows out there is just insane. Todd pretty easily holds the role of best character, almost always staying upbeat and creative while also not hiding always from occasional serious undertones.

Daud (Dishonored)

Daud was gay? Huh. I never felt like they went into his character enough (or maybe I just didn't pay enough attention to the lore; I never did finish his DLC). Still, in Dishonored he sort of holds a role as a larger than life rival, and one of the only people in the game that ever felt like a serious threat to Corvo.

Oskar & Eli (Let the Right One In)

This one also came as a surprise. Apparently in the books, Eli is a male vampire without genitals who lives as a teen girl. There's a lot to unpack there that wasn't exactly noticeable in the movie. Especially weird thinking of Oskar as an LGBT character as he never seemed to recognize Eli as a boy. Though I suppose the point remains the same, because Oskar and Eli's love for each other never seems to be driven primarily by sexual attraction, but rather a mutual desire for acceptance and companionship, which is ultimately what makes the movie so powerful. Hard to rank them separately given how much their relationship with each other defines them in the film, but Eli definitely seems to serve as a powerful protector for Oskar.

Iron Bull (Dragon Age Inquisition)

Never played the Dragon Age games but just from seeing bits and pieces of Inquisition played (and from seeing art work) Iron Bull still seems awesome. He's quite possibly my favorite character whose source I have that little familiarity with. And the dude's a fucking hunk, for real.

Titus Andromedon (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)

I wasn't a huge fan of Titus at first. He struck me as a bit of a cheap stereotype on first appearance, but like everything else in this show, he only improved with time. Never been my favorite on the show by any means though.

Greggory Lee, Mae Borowski, and Angus Delaney (Night in the Woods)

I know I'm in the minority, but Angus is actually my favorite of the three. He has the smallest role in the story but he's also the closest to what an actual gay person is. As in, he's literally just a normal person who dates a guy (except he's also a bear and he's dating a fox). He's quiet and chill, but he always pulls through as a friend for Mae (despite having the least personal connection to her) and he overall just seems like a really awesome guy.

Mae is complicated. At times I want to dislike her, but I'd be lying if I said that wasn't at least partially because of how much I relate to her at times. Mae is one of the best examples I've seen of mental health/illness portrayed in gaming. Sort of like Bojack Horseman, it's weird that this is where we get the deepest, most painfully realistic portrayals of human emotion, but here we are I guess. She might not always be the easiest character to like, but she's definitely not shallow either.

Gregg rulz ok

I'm surprised they took Eli being a boy out of the movie - it was a pretty big plot point in the book. But yeah Eli/Oskar is one of my favorite couples.

Angus was my least favorite NITW character, mainly because I didn't like him interfering with the Gregg/Mae bromance. He wasn't a bad guy, just a sensible/responsible dude who was looking out for his and Gregg's future. But I don't want a world where Gregg and Mae don't break into buildings and smash cars together, you know?

well yeah, but that's what I liked about him :o
You see everything through Mae's perspective, so I feel like Angus is easy to overlook, but from his perspective it's essentially like you've been working through a long and not necessarily easy relationship only for his old high school friend tom come back suddenly and get in the middle of it
