you ever have that one friend who's like, really intent on giving you unecessarily detailed 10 minute play by plays of the last cool moment they had in a video game and are all like "then this guy did this... and I was thinking this... and then this happened, but I dodged it, and then... and then..." and you keep trying to direct the conversation away but they just totally can't take the hint and they go through this agonizingly long description of every single input they pressed during the entire match and how funny and amazing and tense and cool it all was and then the story is done and you're both just sitting there disappointed and only then do they realize it's only really interesting to the people who were there and saw it happen live?

that's basically what the first episode felt like to me. less of a story and more of a gaming diary

It was meant to be an intro to the two main characters, the game they're in, and the game mechanics. Trust me, it gets less dry and more fun as you watch farther in. If episode 5 doesn't hook you, nothing about this show will.

In regards to GGO, I'm enjoying it enough. I wouldn't call it bad, and the author has a lot of fun with it, which I appreciate, but I wouldn't call it great either. There are too many things for an excessive gamer as I am that just takes me too far out of the experience. Games are games. If you try to make them too realistic, it ends up not being fun because real life is fucking boring and restrictive. If you try to also add in too many unrealistic things like a gun blocking bullets and realistic things like how they can taste, feel, experience to the extent of it transferring to real life skills or real life skills transferring to the game as is, it becomes a bit jarring to understand the world they're in. And right after they talk about all the mechanics that are hopelessly realistic, they still add how the girl can look completely different from the way she does irl AND be able to run that quick... When it hasn't solidified its rules and boundaries, it takes me too far out where the viewer is only doing the viewing and the writer is writing in his own world.

Aside from the rules, there are also other weird things like why do they waste so much bullets and then later talk about bullet count and conservation. Why don't they ever use cover IMMEDIATELY? If anybody's ever played any FPS, even outside cover based shooters, run and gun in the open rarely happens because people constantly hide behind walls and covers. Firing only ever happens when a person is barely seen past a wall.

I can't tell if this is because of the inconsistent and half-assed world that the hack writer Reki Kawahara came up with probably while sitting on his toilet or if maybe the Kino's Journey writer hasn't played too many games. Either way, it ends up running into every problem that SAO ever did, where so many wrong things are glorified and taken seriously, and the world feels very uninteresting or heavily geared towards a certain goal without having it breathe on its own.

But I find the characters appealing. I think the MC's college self is pretty hot and her personality is hilarious. Saw the 6 schoolgirls being the burly girls from a mile away, and the tattoo girl is 90% certainly the main girl's favorite singer, because she wasn't available for the tournament which was on the same day as her concert. The big guy is just a big ass nerd, and that's pretty fun. So I'm taking what I can get, and it's still much better than most of the SAO series, which isn't really a high bar

So I just read this one-shot novel, Kimi wa Tsukiyo ni Hikari Kagayaku. Debut work of Sano Tetsuya, illustrated by loundraw.
Got it for a 15-hour flight and finished it in one go.

The story is basically about a guy doing favors for a terminally ill girl. Pretty cliched premise as far as Japanese drama goes, with the two main characters helping with each others existential crises through their interactions, but its got a pretty pleasant sense of humor, which isnt that common in this kind of story.

The writing style is a tad bit too simple though, I guess. Doesnt really set the mood in certain scenes when its supposed to be super heavy, but I also kinda feel that it being so concise actually gives more space for fleshing out the core story and its characters.

Well, Id say that I liked it overall. A bit rough around the edges, but its a pleasant read regardless. Would recommend if it gets a translation some time down the line.

Today's episode might have been the greatest Precure episode that I've ever seen. That was absolutely GLORIOUS! I definitely didn't expect that an episode focusing on two side characters who aren't even Precure (yet?) would be one of the most entertaining episodes I've ever seen, but it just happened. DISCLAIMER: There is going to be a massive image dump of cute screenshots and gifs from this episode in my next post. To those of you with slow computers or high blood-sugar levels, you have been warned.

Nope, Emiru is a different character entirely. Hana and the gang met her in an earlier episode, and she's obsessed with wanting to help people and be a hero. She became a "Precure fangirl" after seeing them save the day in that episode, to the point where she was dressing up as (and acting like) a Precure herself in this episode.

My prediction is that Emiru and Lulu will both become Precure later on in the series, making the main group a party of five. Hugtan won't regain her true form (I still think she's actually a teenager or adult, but she got de-aged when she and Harry pulled a Future Trunks and came back from the dark future) until right at the very end. She'll get her powers back just in time to help Hana and the gang in the final battle of the series, but that's all we'll see of her and she won't actually become one of the main Precure herself.

Speaking of which, Land of the Lustrous is the most amazing CGI anime i've ever seen, the looks and music are beautiful, the story so far is a little bit slow even though i'm on ep 6, but god damn...

Also i absolutely adore the opening and its probably on my top 10 of favorite OP songs.

Every show that uses CGI should strive to look like Land of the Lustrous.
