Spend a portion of it on a trip to Europe.

My grandma gave each of her grandkids $10,000. She told me to do whatever I want with it. My head is saying put it in a long-term investment for later in life, but my heart is telling me to visit "the old country" and see some sights in Western Europe... Ugh... As problems go, there are obviously worse ones, but it's eating me alive right now because I want to do the wrong thing but know I shouldn't.

That's the problem, I really can't do that. I'd maintain my typical standard of living, which is not anywhere near that of backpackers.

then save it. waste of money if you're going to go alone and stay in normal hotels

going alone should only be done if you stay in weird places and meet strangers

have a friend/loved one that will go with? sure, take a trip

I mean, there are places I have family to stay with and stuff. I'm first generation over here. When I went to England 10+ years ago, I didn't pay for accommodations, but that's the only foreign country I have relatives I actually know (not just names written in a family tree). That leg of the journey would basically amount to offering to chip in for petrol and food.

I wouldn't want to go everywhere with anybody else though, as I'm very impulsive and would end up just taking random journeys to things the morning of. I enjoy talking to strangers and stuff too, but the whole "backpacker" approach isn't for me because I hate the idea of sharing my living space with people I'm not related to in some way (that probably stands as the most German-sounding thing I've ever said :P ) or living too below my means. I wouldn't need fancy hotels and Michelin star restaurants, but hostels are 100% out.

The part of me that's saying "go now" is partly due to the UK leaving the EU and then I'd need a visa, and while $10k is a nice lump sum of money, I stand to inherit 100% of my parents' assets, which includes a house that's currently worth around $1M (one a few doors down that's half its size went for $1.2M, and the market only goes up here - all that changes is the speed).

My biggest fear is just needing it for something important or spending a large portion, coming home, and wishing I'd kept it.

I wouldn't say rich rich, but he's in the top 2%, iirc... The gap between 2 and 1 is pretty massive, so the stat is very deceptive. He just bought my mom a new car and paid $3500 for rims/tires for mine though, so that well is bone dry for a while (I only point this out so nobody tells me to just ask him to pay for it - I feel bad accepting handouts as well).

whether you take the trip or not, I would suggest spending some of the money on yourself. life is too short to not enjoy it when you get a chance. if I had saved every spare penny i've earned i'd have a pretty good amount of money but i'd also probably would have been miserable most of my life.

but to be fair i've always had more of a live in the moment type of view considering i'm well aware a person could die any day. (I do also try to plan for my future but I have to force myself to do that)

What do?

Trip to Europe. You got the cash for nothing anyway and memories can last a lifetime. You can always save/invest any cash you have left over but even if you have none you've got something out of it. I'm a live for the moment type of guy rather than save for a day that might never come.

to add, I read a article once stating according to a study people who spend money on events rather than material goods tend to live happier lives, by events they meant concerts, and trips like this.

Probably true. Material goods don't last as long as memories would.

Seems to me that if you went on the trip, you'd end up thinking that you should have save it during the whole trip and not enjoy it at all. Why not put it into savings/investments, and then take the trip in a few years, using what you made on it to partially fund the trip?

I feel like I'll regret either decision, honestly. The future is unknown, so whether I'd rather have memories or money in it, who knows? I'm not a gambler and never have been, so that's probably a big part of my problem.

The worst part is nobody IRL telling me it's a bad idea... My mom travelled a lot when she was younger, mostly to Spain and Italy, and loves that whole thing. My dad's all about material goods (but did travel while in the Navy). Th majority of my family does travel abroad a lot and loves it though, and that does contribute to my itch.

It's complicated and I think I need to just sit on it for a little while. I'll renew my passport then just decide later.

How old are you? That might give a better idea of what to do. Traveling younger is probably best but if you do invest it and then go on the trip later it might be better due to age and having more money to spend on the trip.
