That might make S4 more watchable for me, but it was so much meaner than S1 through S3 that I don't really have much desire to revisit it

yeah, i enjoyed s4 for what it was but it's always so hard to go back and rewatch it.

They remixed S4 so it's fairly similar to the format of S1-3. So think about the Lindsay episode and the Tobias episode and how they cover the plane scene multiple times, and it's clever but not really snappy humor. In the remix, it's done somewhat chronologically and they usually do the scene once. Like Lindsay is on the plane and whacks Tobias and we cut to Tobias's point of view of the whole thing.

And most importantly, Ron Howard has updated narration for the changes. So short episodes with better arrangement... it's way better. I found myself laughing and binging the season.

did they add any scenes to the s4 recut? i couldn't tell if i had just forgotten about scenes or if they were new when i was watching the first two episodes of the new s4

I was re-watching S4 (the original release) earlier in the year. I remember talking with a co-worker at the time who thought S4 sucked and defending it pretty adamantly, which inspired my first ever rewatch of it. Back when it came out, it was the type of thing that grew on me a ton; by the end I kinda thought it was brilliant and one of the most ambitious seasons of television I'd ever seen.

But...this time I only made it halfway through. Perhaps it still does get brilliant or perhaps my memory of it is way inflated. Not sure if I should finish watching it the original way or check out that re-release I also knew nothing about.

Ramblings aside, damn do I hope season 5 can recapture some of that earlier AD magic.

It absolutely gets better. The first few episodes are really slow and are establishing recurring plotlines and setups to jokes that have punchlines entire episodes later. The first George Sr. episode in particular is a snoozefest. About midway through the season, things start intertwining and it becomes incredible. Some of the last episodes are hilarious because they're almost all punchlines at that point. I loved the experimental storytelling, and it gets WAY better on a rewatch, but the problem is that initial hump in addition to the format turning people off.

I'm kind of skeptical about the remix for that reason. It seems to me like it would draw even more attention to people not being in the same room, at the tradeoff of smoothing out the pacing.

I'm 8 episodes into the remix and so far it still mostly only focuses on 2-3 characters per episode, and even though they're trying to be chronological about it, there's still a lot of back and forth. Like it still isn't until episode 7 or 8 that Maebe gets any focus, and then they still had to go back and get us caught up on what she was doing earlier in the timeline.

I think it's working well enough. They're building the episodes around the plots where multiple characters interact, and fitting the individual character scenes in around them. Like they used the Michael/GM roommate plot to put in the Maebe info dump, and it fit well since she was involved in that plot. And then Maebe's info dump was a good segue to fit in Lindsey moving into the penthouse and continuing that plotline. It's had fairly good synergy so far.
