I think (or would hope) people understand that racial discrimination didn't just end like that, but it's really hard to believe that there were still legitimate slaves well into the 1960s in parts of the US.

I'm not saying I don't believe it, but of course people think slavery ended with the civil war because there was no reason to believe otherwise.

This is a very interesting read though.

I mean if you have a small number of slaves in a rural area it theoretically wouldnt be hard to hind the fact that theyre free from them

Theyre both under educated and isolated

Yeah it just takes a minute to conceptualize considering how interconnected everything is these days, you know? Idk that's how I feel.

I mean even in the 60s, there was a lot you can hide. Its not like you could just go on facebook and taking a selfie with your slaves accidentally photobombing you.

I'm pretty sure even people that are more flippant about the issue know about the Civil War. (edit; and Jim Crow and the massive rights violations and crimes committed against blacks for the larger part of the 20th century.)

The difference though being condoned by the federal govt. to being an outright crime. Acknowledging this absolutely binary context isn't being flippant. It is an important moment* in American history.

When I read the topic title I imagined a situation like that episode of Gilligan's Island where the Japanese soldiers don't know WWII ended.

That's pretty much what it was and holy shit that's depressing

this isn't exactly slavery in the sense we meant before the civil war, to be fair, it is a share cropping arrangement that was indeed popular for a long time after the civil war, and did continue longer in the mississippi delta area specifically than most of the rest of the country

As I would realize, people are afraid to share their stories, because in the South so many of the same white families who owned these plantations are still running local government and big businesses. They still hold the power. So the poor and disenfranchised really dont have anywhere to share these injustices without fearing major repercussions. To most folks, it just isnt worth the risk. So, sadly, most situations of this sort go unreported.

Seems like it's more "slavery" in the "poverty trap" or "company store" sense, depending on your bias going in.
