My mother is from England, so these words are spoken a lot by half of my family. I don't know why I hate them so much, I just do. As far as ones nobody around me uses but I also can't stand, "mingle" and "oy vey" are irritating.

What words do you have an irrational dislike of?

In Alberta they say "social", short for "social studies", versus everywhere else that calls it "socials". And it isn't irrational.

I don't like the word "lift", either. It's an elevator because it changes elevation. What does "lift" mean? Do I take the stairs down?

???

Never heard it called either of those before. We just called it social studies or history.

I for one like the term maths.

It's shorthand for mathematics, doing mathematic is awkward.

You can get AC on a generator, utilities routed to the home are mains electric and mains gas, both referred to as mains contextually.

I'm fully aware of what maths is sort for. Knowing that doesn't make it not sound awkward. There is no such noun "Mathematic" because Mathematics is singular.

After watching this I've changed my mind and it's pretty clear to me maths is correct. She spent the whole 6 minutes trying to convince me and it had the opposite effect.

Mathematics is plural. Mathematica is plural, it encompasses all mathematic things, made out of the Greek adjective mathematic. So it's plural and the misconception came from abbreviations in text books.

I highly recommend videos from that group if you're interested in the subject matter. I've watched probably 50+ of them and really found only a few that I didn't enjoy.

Maths just sounds awkward.

It also makes me think of an equally awkward (and similar) word: youths. It's the "ths" part. It doesn't belong in English.

Reminds me of when harry potter is first found by hagrid and hagrid learns harry doesnt know anything about the wizarding world and he asks Dursely "what do you mean he doesnt know anything?"
Harry thinks hes making a stab at his intelligence so he proclaims: "Hey, I do know things! I can do Maths and stuff."
