For the first time since Europeans arrived in this country, Mutz notes, white Americans are being told that they will soon be a minority race. When members of a historically dominant group feel threatened, she explains, they go through some interesting psychological twists and turns to make themselves feel okay again. First, they get nostalgic and try to protect the status quo however they can. They defend their own group (all lives matter), they start behaving in more traditional ways, and they start to feel more negatively toward other groups.

Doesn't help when a political group demonizes white people for years and to this day there's anti white meetings, signs and posters flooding college campuses making them easy recruiting tools for white supremacy groups, basically, the left is the reason nazism and those groups are regaining power and footholds in America, real stupid to antagonize a race who populates the majority of the country.

It's all stupid, and Donnie fucked it up.

The Irish weren't originally considered white. Then the Italians weren't originally considered white. As a matter of fact, there was this thing called NINA (look it up) for the Irish, and Italians were actually depicted in cartoons as lazy, with very particular noses and mustaches.... just like hispanics are depicted now.

Eventually the new waves get accepted as "white" (unless they look radically different, like asians and africans), it's a process that starts with the food or drinks (e.g. irish beer, italian food), then a holiday (e.g. St. Patrick's) and in a generation or two after that, integration.

The process had already begun for hispanics, tex mex food is a thing, 5 de mayo is a thing, margaritas are a thing, etc. Some hispanics were entering the pop music mainstream as... pop singers, not as "Mexicans" (e.g. Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato).

But then along came Donnie and stoked the racial tensions and set back this integration process for 3 or 4 decades.
