Skipped it when it came out, because of the hurricane situation. It's been out for quite a while now. So how was it?

Good but not great is accurate. Mechanics are really cool and make the game feel fresh. Unfortunately, there is a crippling lack of environmental and enemy variety which is atypical of Metroid, or even Metroidvania in general, games.

Also the game is infinitely worse about post game collectibles than any other Metroid.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Kinda went in not expecting to since Mercury Steam and all but I did enjoy the gameplay and boss fights though.

Main flaws were basically what I had of the original game which is the straight-forward advancement that eventually starts to feel tedious and cyclical but you can't really fix that part of M2. That being said the later half is muuuuuch better in the remake and you feel pretty awesome all powered up and the fights are great.

Metroid 2 isn't great so it didn't have much to work with. You're missing absolutely nothing if you skip it.

Normally I'd agree, but doesn't AM2R's existence (and general consideration as a far superior game) run up against this?

I've only played AM2R which is where my opinion comes from so no. It honestly is probably hurt by the ZM gameplay more than anything, since it sets up bad expectations.
