Haven't forgotten about you guys!

Episodes 6-10

Recap: The hunters pass Stage 2 by first hunting boar and then diving into a canyon and being lifted out by thermal updrafts. Then they board an airship to Stage 3, during which Gon and Killua play a game with the chief examiner. They are now a few steps into Stage 3, 'Majority Decision.' In a best-of-5 tournament, Tonpa tanks Round 1, Gon wins Round 2 with a candle, Kurapika smashes a guy pretending to be of his parents' clan's killer, and Leorio gets into a wagering game on the veracity of the victim's unconsciousness. Hisoka passes Stage 3.

These episodes for the most part are pretty straightforward and unexciting. The best thing I can say is that Gon is an excellent protagonist - he has yet to have a bad moment on the show, which really impresses me. He's pure-hearted, but less aggressively stupid/annoying than Kid Goku. He's not afraid to play a little dirty (e.g. to get the examiner to use his right hand, or to blow out the second opponent's candle), but he's also not a conniver (and he doesn't feel the need to explain everything aloud to us).

My favorite part of these episodes is when Killua rage-quits the keep-away game with the examiner and explains that he and Gon are being toyed with by the examiner, who hasn't even used his right hand or left leg. Gon realizes the chasm in skill... and decides to keep playing anyway. Time and again, Gon is handed the "solution" to the puzzle (you don't need to pick A or B in the quiz; you can't beat the examiner at all). But it's not just the winning that Gon is interested in - he's interested in challenging himself, whether it's with a hypothetical moral dilemma or trying to make an old man use his right hand.

In contrast, Tonpa had the series's worst moment in Episode 10, when he spent 3 or 5 straight minutes having a verbally detailed orgasm about how MAJORITY DECISION is now TEARING THE TEAM APART. It's a miserable momentum-killer that explains something pretty damn obvious and legit feels like padding. Thank God for Hisoka's section where he catches the knives thrown by an ex-examiner Hunter - short but sweet.

As for the rest of what's happening, most of it has been spent in majority decision mode. It hasn't been awful, but I'm ready to see something more interesting. Also, props to Leorio for making such smart bets.

---

* When it really comes to decisive blows, the series's art has shifted to look more intense. So far, that's Hisoka's one-punch KO of Leorio and Kurapika's one-punch KO of Maritani (or whatever that Burter-looking motherfucker's name is).

* While I don't like the setup much, I'm pretty invested in Leorio's betting game - because depending on its outcome, Killua would be next.

* The prison guy administering Stage 3 is ugh.

* Even after Stage 2 has ended, Killua is still killing random redshirts for bumping into him. Interested in seeing where Killua goes from here.

* That "TOP NOTCH ROCK CLIMBER" redshirt who tries to climb down from the tower outside... Incredible.

* Enjoyed watching smug Kurapika getting punked during the taste test in Step 2.

I think I agree with this statement, but more by default than in the actual spirit of it.

It's the arc I like least anyways.

The rest are all great except for one problem, and it's a problem this arc shares.

And that problem's name is Hisoka.

He's not even fun to hate. I just hate him, and I hate the fact that he exists as he does.

The only OP from the 1999 series I miss is the Yorkshinn one.

That is still one of my favorite OPs from any anime.

But the 2011 song is fantastic.

I could tell that I was getting a faster version of the show (and I assumed I was, like in FMAB/FMA). Was any content straight-up cut?

also no spoilers for future episodes please, even innocuous ones

DKC2, celtics, and board gaming, mostly. also, the thought of doing writeups stalls me once in a while. ALSO, i'm watching on crunchy roll, which has super-annoying, un-mutable advertisements which is a deterrent

Yeah HxH from the get go, I wanted the early arcs to be over and done with.

It happens in a lot of shounen series, where early fights have the characters rely more on gimmicks. I like to see them fight with a fully expanded arsenal.

...Uh, no?

First of all, there's the (ACTUAL SPOILERS) pedophilia, which the show keeps playing off as comic relief after an upcoming arc, but just makes me literally sick to my stomach. The fact that they continue the joke with Palm sucks, too. They're both cringe incarnate.

I do appreciate that!

I had no idea Hisoka would even be part of the show after this arc, though. He seemed like a possible arc villain who would be taken down/killed/otherwise removed from the show at the end of it.

How in the flying fuck does "I am deeply uncomfortable with this character being a pedophile and being played for laughs" become "I am judging this character as a real person"?

No, seriously, I'm waiting to hear your logic on this.

I disagree that it's just played for laughs, it's an important part of his character.

You can have a problem with that aspect but to tear the whole thing down is extremely shallow.

Plus you're doing that classical thing where people have a problem with the mass murderer because of his political opinions, instead of like, the mass murder part. Killing is so not part of your everyday experience that you overlook it as just a part of stories, but touching on other things offends your sensibilities for some reason even if they are real parts of the world.

I'm kind of rambling, but for example I greatly oppose religion in most real contexts, but I'm never going to hate a fictional character for being religious, even taken to it's most negative connotations. If it serves the story and creates the drama I seek I like it.

Tell me where I said it's just played for laughs.

Because I never said that.

I said that I hate that it is played for laughs. At all.

Also, rambling noted. For some reason, you're stanning for this character. I hate him for something, and the fact that it's important to his character doesn't suddenly redeem that something - if anything, that is why I hate him in the first place.

Deal with it, because I'm not gonna justify my opinions to someone who can't seem to handle them.

Because instead of opening up with an invitation for a discussion, you opened up with this:

Then proceeded to ramble when I explained my views.

You gave me every reason not to discuss it with you.

I acknowledge the last sentence, but I'm still gonna respond to this. I'm not saying he's a bad character. I'm saying I hate him and not in the "fun to hate" sort of way that most villains fall under.

Hence the reason I'm not bringing up the other stuff he does because if I was judging him as a real person, I would've. Which baffles me - someone accuses me of doing something, and then immediately points out that I'm not doing it.

EDIT: Also you should put a spoiler tag on that bit.

Episode 11

Recap: Leorio loses the bet and Killua instantly kills the final opponent. But since Leorio gambled away 50 hours, the gang goes into a room to pass the time. Meanwhile, other candidates begin to arrive at the destination.

Real talk, I can't believe this took an entire episode. It might be even worse than the previous episode because it makes a fool out of Leorio (who up to this point was performing excellently against the woman prisoner). It essentially turns him into Yamcha, a perv who's utterly incompetent to boot. It would be slightly amusing to watch him get punked in rock-paper-scissors if it didn't last so fucking long, and if not for Kurapika being the exposition machine this time. Kurapika is losing the goodwill from before.

That all just makes it so much sweeter that Killua wrecked his opponent so quickly. Also, Kurapika curiously asking about how that killing technique works afterward is great. Quick guess on fighting ability: Gon > Killua > Kurapika > Leorio. Killua probably has the edge on Gon in a dirty/fatal fight though.
