Despite what some of you suggested, I could not bring myself to skip the first game of the series and actually am enjoying the game a great deal now. The combat system is not as bad as it seemed when I first tried it years ago and the only nuisance is gathering herbs.

Currently I am in Chapter II so haven't made that many major decisions yet. I've read I can import my save files into Witcher II and from there into Witcher III. How much will my decisions affect the later games?

Is it kinda like the Mass Effect series where earlier decisions are lightly touched on but does not affect gameplay at all? Does having some gear imported over make the beginning of the later games easier?

Comments and opinions are appreciated,

Thank you.

I see. So only items will be imported over to Witcher 2 but decisions have no bearing?

Some decisions will affect things. But it is pretty minute differences.

A character might say something different to acknowledge how you handled their problem in the first game. The Enhanced Edition added a journal entry to explain how an optional romance ended between the games. Some decisions in Witcher 1 make you an enemy of a group, and that in turn will make dealing with that group more difficult in the second game. A couple characters can survive or die based on player decisions and their deaths will affect the next game. One doesn't actually show up, but you receive a message and package if they lived. (Oddly this character shows up in the third game even if you import saves where the character died from first game into the second game and then import that save into the third game.) The other character that can live or die by your hand can cause another character to challenge you in the second game.

You get an item from one guy in the 2nd game if you don't kill somebody in the first game. Otherwise he attacks you. He attacks you by default if you don't import though.

Even worse if you made every single choice correct except one and you get locked out of the best ending.

I believe (don't know first hand unfortunately) that it is like a lot of earlier PC RPGs where you can import your character so that he starts with improved stats and stuff. I know Ultima and Quest for Glory games used to do this and I imagine that is what Witcher took that from.
