To be fair, charges are rarely pressed for minor offenses as it requires court attendance. The police don't press charges, the store employee or manager must then back it up in a court of law.

If there was something illegal done by police, then IA will reveal it. Sounds fair to me.

As a loss prevention officer, I once had a judge tell me I needed to be more selective of who I chose to have arrested for shoplifting, as the cases were deemed trivial. More often then not, unless violence was involved, I'd catch them, reclaim the goods, then release them as I knew prosecution was a waste of time.

*Group is released once they have a stern talking to by the officers outside of the private business.

Sounds pretty standard for those loitering / being a nuisance.

Did they tucker out from resisting police before the video rolled and leave quietly? And are we still ignoring that Starbucks is entirely cool with people hanging out there? It's the same thing at Panera. I "loitered' there all the time when I was working with my job coach. I was never arrested.

I think most here would care based on the absurdity alone. Anyone being booted from a business with a specific policy of allowing patrons to stay as long as they like whether they immediately buy something or not is ridiculous. In this instance, it appears to be racially motivated based simply on the fact that no witnesses saw or heard any unruly behavior, never saw the staff interact with these men before calling the police, and the only visible difference between them and other patrons is their race. It's possible there was some other motivator, but currently there's no information whatsoever suggesting what that motivator might be.

And again, SB policy is to permit "loitering."

It's amazing that so many people's world views demand that any brown person who has a negative interaction with a business, police, or authority figure MUST have done something to deserve it.

Look at how many cops came just to arrest people doing nothing.

The video in question picks up when the arrest was happening. We dont know what happened and why. Where they being loud and obnoxious? Every Starbucks I have known people come in who havent bought anything and Ive lived on the south side of Chicago my entire life.

The only time anyone has been asked to leave was when someone got out of hand and screaming.

For example my friend who had a book signing at Starbucks who is also black....an older black man came in and asked for two free hot waters and started screaming and threatened to throw hot water in peoples faces and only threw scalding hot water in her mother.

Eventually people managed to get the water out of his hands.

If someone started up a recording as the older black man walked out with employees screaming for him to leave you wouldnt see the full context of the situation. You would only see employees screaming at a poor old black man who is looking down at the floor like he was discriminated against.

Context matters people.

Could it be true the employees over reacted, yes.

Could it also be true the employees were right to call the police and for those people to be arrested, yes.

The problem is we dont know what the full context of situation is.
