Ah okay. Maybe consider replacing the ranger with a fighter, so that you'll have a tank. The Assassin class you specced can also use a bow too.

The map is your friend. Check it constantly. It's really easy to get turned around, especially after a battle, and end up running in the wrong direction for 10 minutes. But once you've gotten some portcrystals placed it becomes much simpler.

Without spoiling anything, here's a few portcrystal placement recommendations:
1. The waycastle you go through with the hydra early in the game. That little bridge with a big gate and a group of tents that leads into the mountain pass. There's quite a few quests that take you to locations right near there and hiking all the way there every time becomes a real chore.
2. The back exit to the forest area. It allows quick access to the important section of the forest without having to trek through it every time.
3. The ruined castle to the west of the forest's main entrance. Another quest hotspot.
4. Hillfigure Knoll. Quests, as well as a decent jumping off point for heading to the northern and north-western sections of the map.
5. In front of the fortress to the west. A couple quests take you there, but really the best part is that there's a drake spawn (I think it's a 7-day respawn) just to the south of it which you can farm to dragon-forge your gear relatively early on.

Those should set you up pretty nicely to make it much easier to get around. Although, to be honest, Dragon's Dogma's world is one of the few where I really didn't mind getting lost and just exploring for the hell of it. It really felt like a natural world. Most games make me feel like "go kill some stuff, and here's a place to do it in." Dragon's Dogma felt more like "Here's a world. Oh, and there's some stuff to kill in it, too!"

Well, it is possible to use levitate to get up the small cliff ledge at the back entrance. It's tricky, though. You have to be basically pixel perfect. With as many tries as you're likely to need, it's probably just faster to sprint through the Witchwood real quick.

If you've only got 1 right now, I'd hang onto it. Think of it like a mobile resupply, effectively. Whenever you're exploring further away from the city, if you run into trouble and start getting low on supplies or whatever, just plop the crystal down. Then you can use the eternal ferrystone to hop back to the city, rest & resupply, and ferrystone back to your crystal. Pick it back up and keep going.

Yeah, if you're playing "online" it means that the pawns you find to hire in the rift are the actual pawns made by other players. Similarly, there's a chance for your pawn to show up in other players' rifts to be hired. If they do hire your pawn and use it for a while, it will gain knowledge of areas/quests/enemies (things like "TIS WEAK TO FIRE!"). When they dismiss your pawn, they can give it a rating, leave a comment for you, and send it back with an item of their choosing. You also gain an amount of rift crystals based on how long they kept your pawn in their party and how much experience they gained while traveling with it.

EDIT: If they send an item back as a gift, it's automatically stored at the inn. So don't be confused if it says you got something and you can't find it in your inventory.

Yeah, it's mostly just basic stuff like various meat or fish. Occasionally you'll get something pretty decent, though.

Although towards the end of my most recent addiction to the game, when I knew I only had a couple more things to finish up before moving on to something new, I hired a bunch of really low-level pawns and immediately dismissed them with some super rare gifts. I like to think at least a couple of them were just picking the game up for the first time and when they got that message it just made their day. :-P

Probably a good choice. I found it best to have a party that consisted of one melee tank (fighter or warrior pawn), one ranged damage dealer (usually myself, I loved playing assassin), one magic cannon (sorcerer pawn), and one healer/buffer (mage pawn, usually mine).

I found it easier to have my own main pawn as the healer because it seemed like most pawns you can hire are not actually set up very well with their inclinations. A healer pawn that's set up with the "guardian" inclination as their main, for example, won't do much of anything. Basically any time you see a pawn with the guardian inclination, immediately dismiss it. It's completely useless because what it does is make the pawn literally stand next to you and do nothing until you get hit. A fighter with the guardian inclination won't engage any enemies until you take damage, at which point it will attack that target and then return to literally standing right next to you and being useless. It can actually be harmful, in fact, because if you're a ranged player such as a mage or an archer it will actually draw attention to by standing next to you and doing absolutely nothing. >_<

Since you can't affect hired pawns' inclinations, you need to be careful which ones you pick. But you can set your own pawn's inclinations using the elixirs that can be bought from the Jonathan guy in the tent at the first encampment just down the trail from Cassardis.

That's a decent set for an offensive mage, but it's actually better if you can switch them. Scather means they target the strongest enemy on the field, and challenger means they target ranged enemies. So having Scather first means the Challenger secondary won't ever take the lead in its AI (since there will always be enemies to attack, and thus they'll always be ranked according to power). If Challenger is top priority, it will take out the ranged enemies first. And once there are no ranged enemies left, Scather will take over and it will attack the remaining enemies in order of strength.

For a straight healer, the best combination in my opinion would be Utilitarian/Medicant. If Medicant is priority 1, the pawn will spam healing spells every single time you lose a tiny sliver of health. Putting Utilitarian first means they'll buff you during battle as first priority, and only heal when you've actually taken a decent amount of damage to make it worthwhile.
