The only reason he has that is because he overcame adverse poverty to dominate in a field that's predominantly black, and then gained mainstream appeal (which is predominately white, mind you). His individual success doesn't remove the fact that millions can't and won't reach that level of success, or even a fraction of it. He is an extreme outlier, much like Oprah is. Much like Zuckerberg is. Much like Bill Gates is. Much like Neal DeGrasse Tyson is. Using them to prove any argument for or against privilege is fallacious. You need to work, but you need the opportunity almost as much.

Yeah I agree with everything you said. This guy clearly had to work through some disadvantages.

It's just weird seeing someone who currently has significantly more privilege than I will ever sniff telling me about the privilege I have for being white. He is correct, but it comes off a bit off coming from him.

I think because people say things like this that people think that. And I don't mean to attack cjsdowg or anyone, but when people say things like this, I think that's why people think that's what people mean by white privilege. That white people have it easier than black people or minorities.

It's funny how certain words bother folks so much they have to call them "divisive, dismissive, etc." instead of simply doing what a logically-thinking person would do and try to discuss/understand why the person claiming these things is claiming them.

If all you can muster is simply calling something divisive and walking away you haven't even solved anything - you're just scared to have the discussion and don't want to admit it.
