Ah, the new David Letterman episode is coming out this Friday, I'll be sure to watch it. His interviews are fantastic and insightful so I'm definitely looking forward to this one with Jay Z.

The topic title is misleading and I can guarantee the linked article is going to misconstrue what the interview will be about. Letterman touches on wide range of aspects on the lives and beliefs of who he previously interviewed in the series, Obama, George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai (Pakistani girl who got shot point blank) so I can imagine the "white privilege" part will not play a large aspect of the interview.

The only reason he has that is because he overcame adverse poverty to dominate in a field that's predominantly black, and then gained mainstream appeal (which is predominately white, mind you). His individual success doesn't remove the fact that millions can't and won't reach that level of success, or even a fraction of it. He is an extreme outlier, much like Oprah is. Much like Zuckerberg is. Much like Bill Gates is. Much like Neal DeGrasse Tyson is. Using them to prove any argument for or against privilege is fallacious. You need to work, but you need the opportunity almost as much.

The problem with the term "white privilege" is that it's needlessly divisive. there are plenty of poor white people out there that definitely don't feel privileged and aren't hearing this shit, cause it doesn't really apply to them.

Class privilege has and will always be a thing. Black people, in general, are poorer than whites. People make fun of the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" saying but it's true. Jay z is proof of that. This guy came from about as bad of a situation you're going to see in this country and look what he's made of himself. If you want change you've got to work for it, not expect someone else to hand it to you. Cause I've got bad news, they're never going to.

White privilege does exist to an extent but its usually blown out of proportion. A poor white person has more in common with a poor black person than someone like JayZ does. And JayZ has more in common with someone like Donald Trump than a poor white person does.

I actually used my white privilege today. Got pulled over. I'm thinking fuck my tags are expired, he's prob gonna search my car, and fuck I was prob speeding too... Cop comes up and asks if I know what he's pulling me over for. "I'm young and I'm bla..." the officer interrupts me and says he's just joking around. The law doesn't apply to white people, high fives me and tells me enjoy the rest of my day.

Edit: Could've been worse lol.. prob would've gotten shot if I wasn't white or tried reaching for his gun.

To meet this threat, the southern aristocracy began immediately to engineer this development of a segregated society. Through their control of mass media, they revised the doctrine of white supremacy. They saturated the thinking of the poor white masses with it, thus clouding their minds to the real issue involved in the Populist Movement. That crippled and eventually destroyed the Populist Movement of the nineteenth century.

If it may be said of the slavery era that the white man took the world and gave the Negro Jesus, then it may be said of the Reconstruction era that the southern aristocracy took the world and gave the poor white man Jim Crow. He gave him Jim Crow. And when his wrinkled stomach cried out for the food that his empty pockets could not provide, he ate Jim Crow, a psychological bird that told him that no matter how bad off he was, at least he was a white man, better than the black man. And he ate Jim Crow. And when his undernourished children cried out for the necessities that his low wages could not provide, he showed them the Jim Crow signs on the buses and in the stores, on the streets and in the public buildings. And his children, too, learned to feed upon Jim Crow, their last outpost of psychological oblivion.

To use white privilege as a cudgel against poor whites is really to miss the point.

Is there a more needlessly toxic, caustic, useless term, that does absolutely nothing to help race relations and in fact does the opposite, creating and widening unnecessary political divisions, while lacking nuance and killing any shot at good faith from either side in the discussion because everyone would prefer to remain vague and willfully dishonest?
