My computer seemed fine after a restart anyway.

I can't remember if it was from a steaming site, but on a couple occasions I got some kind of malware that sets your search engine as some fake one that looks real. Then even if you set the default search engine back to normal, it still redirects to the fake one. Very scary. Somehow I got rid of it but I don't remember how and I'd freak out if it happened again

I've been insanely lucky with this computer, actually. I'm almost at five years with it now and it's barely had any sort of issue. Maybe it's a little slower to load up after signing in, but the difference is only being like a minute instead of thirty seconds. Other computers I've had started experiencing severe issues well before five years, and some didn't even last that long at all.

But it also seems like Windows is way better in terms of not crashing, since around Windows 7, so that might have something do with it.

My current computer's biggest issue is that I can't really turn it off because sometimes it's really hard to get it running again. And of course it wants to restart constantly for updates and eventually it will just do it on its own instead of letting me pick a time and then I have to worry about it never turning on again.

The forced updates are really annoying, even if your computer reliably turns back on. Couldn't they have figured out some way by now to not require a restart? Or at least make it just do a normal restart like any other type of program you'd install, not this restart that has extra time to install updates.

The worst is when you get an "update and shut down" option and use it, then the next day when you boot up your computer to check something real quick, it's also updating again for some reason and you end up waiting like 20 minutes

Ever since that whole fiasco with Windows 10 trying to force itself on me, Windows updates are turned completely off on my computer. Every now and then I'll get a reminder that I have 60+ updates waiting to install but I'll take my chances with what I've got.

I have a pirated version of Windows 7 that still automatically updates but has never tried to upgrade to 10

The forced upgrade to 10 was a major deal a couple of years ago but it's not a thing anymore. Nowadays I stop updates because they check my programs and sometimes they figure out that they're not all legitimate.

The only thing I pirate nowadays is sports streams, but I don't really feel guilty about it at all since cable companies are awful and their subscription models suck. I know there is stuff like MLB.tv but I feel like that would be a waste unless I actually watched like five full games a week.

I guess there's also stuff like Sling? I still don't really know how that works. Isn't that basically like cable but cheaper and with fewer pointless channels?

We have sling, it's $25 a month and gets basically everything I want. I can't watch a new tv show on Fox live or whatever but when do I need that? Mainly it's for baseball and then mindless passive viewing like regular tv

When I think about strong teams like all the Boston ones, I think about how it won't be long until they decline again as all teams do, and then we won't have to hear about how good they are. Except then I realize that since they are in a large market, they'll attract free agents easily and they'll probably be good for a long time just like the Yankees.

One of my old roommates waked and baked literally every day (not at 420 am tho). This was the summer between undergrad and grad school for him. His dad worked at an engineering company and pulled some strings with the CEO to get him a job in the lab for the summer. It all came up pretty quick, so my roommate had no chance of passing the drug test. He got clean urine from a different roommate, went and took the test, but it turns out he went to the wrong clinic. The test had to be done by a certain time, so he had to drive to the right clinic right then. He had a little bit of the clean urine left, so he used the rest to dilute it with his own. Ended up failing the test (obviously) and it was a pretty big embarrassment for his dad.

I won't lie, I was satisfied by the ending of that story since I'm spiteful that I can't get a job. But I mean, come on. I know a lot of people get jobs because they "know somebody", but it's kind of bullshit when that person is your dad. That doesn't require a lot of networking effort

I'm not saying I wouldn't take a job if a family member hooked me up, either. It's just kind of bullshit how that works sometimes. Like I'm trying to imagine what would lead up to him failing a drug test, did they even bother to interview him at all? If there was an interview process (which I imagine they put other candidates who didn't "network" through), surely it would have taken enough time for him to stop smoking for a while.

And I agree that networking sucks. I can tell when people are trying to network with me, it always feels so artificial and transactional. So I'm not very good at networking for my benefit, either, since I imagine others would feel the same.

Almost everyone I know got their job because they knew someone. You know how all growing up adults always said, "You work hard in school now and you'll be the one laughing. The kids goofing off are the ones that will be pumping your gas down the line." That's not true at all. The kids goofing off made a bunch of friends and have great jobs now because networking is the way 70% of people get their jobs (at least when I got that statistic 4 years ago)

It doesn't bug me when someone gets a job through their parents or whatever, but it does bug me when someone I know is an actual dumbass and not qualified to do much, yet has a really good job through their contacts, and even worse is when they screw it up and then find another good job somewhere else because they have a bunch of friends willing to help them out so they take it all for granted.

Well I don't know the full story, so maybe I was quick to judge. If he just got a foot in the door through his dad, I think that's fair - I'd be the first to tell you that the process of just getting an interview nowadays is some horseshit, and people need all the help they can get. But if they just skipped the interview process entirely, I don't really think that's fair to other candidates, and in this case it seemed like a move that didn't benefit either party.

That is, again, if it happened that way. I was assuming such because he apparently didn't have time to get clean for the test. In my experience, almost every engineering company has at least two rounds of interviews, and it almost always takes at least a week between each.

He got set up with the interview through his dad's connections, interviewed, was offered the job, and had the piss test set up all within a couple days. It was only a 3 month position or so, which is probably why there weren't multiple rounds of interviews, along with his dad setting it up

With my current job, I heard about it from my uncle in like April of last year, got an interview set up in like August, and then hired on in November. Pretty absurd. From what I've seen since being here, it doesn't usually take THAT long to hire someone, but they just can never decide on anything. They'll interview a million people and just sit on their resumes for what feels like forever. Meanwhile everyone here has to pick up the slack because we're constantly down like 3 people since they won't ever move forward with a hire.

My job had the opposite problem of arbitrarily hiring a bunch of people and then nobody would have any work to do. Their process was pretty quick (at least when I went through it), but the more I worked there, the more I felt like they hire pretty much everyone that gets interviewed.
