One is derogatory and one isn't. Although I'd say the one that's a modified version of the Japanese name for Japan is worse.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J**
J** is an English abbreviation of the word "Japanese". Today it is generally regarded as an ethnic slur among Japanese minority populations in other countries, although English-speaking countries differ in the degree to which they consider the term offensive. In the United States, Japanese Americans have come to find the term very controversial or extremely offensive, even when used as an abbreviation.[1] In the past, J** was not considered primarily offensive; however, during and after the events of World War II, the term became derogatory.

Hey look you're wrong

You'll have to change the asterisks to the term in the link, obviously.

Because "brits" and "aussies" weren't historically used as ethnic slurs for an oppressed minority. It's offensives to truncate "Japanese" because the term was deliberately used to deride and offend them.

When I was in elementary school we were having our wwii unit and on the final test I could not remember how to spell Japanese. So I used the shortened version. When I got sent to the counselor for being "racist" they thought it was the funniest thing they'd ever heard.

That is what kind of sucks about this particular slur. It's such an intuitive way to truncate the name, such that it's very easy to use it out of ignorance instead of malice. I'm rather annoyed at the racists that ruined a perfectly good term.

Grammatically it's the same thing. Culturally it is not. Ergo, you have to keep the distinction in mind when interacting with other people.

I'd guess it's due to the fact that people use it as a racist term. Same with the short version of Pakistan. Although a country isn't a race so it really makes no sense why some folk use it in this way.

Slurs directed at "history's winners" or white people don't seem to ever count. Look at stuff like "Yanks" and "Limies"... Nobody cares. I understand this in as much as those in power don't have an inferiority complex or anything to generally be upset by.

"Kraut" (attn: mods - my dad's family are German) seems to get a pass. The Wolfenstein II discussions went nuts with it... IMO, you either ban every racial slur regardless of its perceived severity or allow all of them. Real bigotry exists within treating people differently, be it better or worse.

But has anyone actually said where the racism lies?

What you are trying to tell me that this is racist is because some american soldiers who hated the enemies they were fighting( who bombed their countries' warships with no reason) who also called them j*** (probably just because it was convenient) is the reason why now its considered racist ?

That sounds like a load of horseshit if thats the reason.

It is really stupid that you can't. When people have to continually explain why something is offensive in order to keep the offense alive, it's obviously not that bad. And, quite frankly, it was *NEVER* really a slur. The fact that it conveyed negative feelings is inherent within the actual feelings towards that group. And at the time there were (and technically still are) many very real slurs which evoked racial stereotypes.
