It's no secret that China has attained considerable economic dominance in the world by not trading particularly fairly (namely, ignoring a lot of the human rights and copyright laws that the rest of the world won't compromise on), and I'd have no issue with trying to combat that to level the playing field, but I don't think Trump's approach of applying broad tariffs in an attempt to intimidate them into compliance is going to help. Especially not where China is more than capable of striking back in a manner that will probably hurt the US more than they end up hurting (China's pretty close to being able to be self-sufficient). Instead, I think it'd be more prudent to apply tariffs that specifically target the sources of their advantages. Applying tariffs to sweatshops that would cost more than paying the workers a passable wage would, for example. That's going to result in a dramatic increase in product costs worldwide, thanks to how much the world has come to depend on that cheap Chinese labour, but it creates a very clear "if you do this, the tariff goes away" message that lets the rest of the world start competing. China will still has advantages it can use even after being cut down to size like that(their sheer population density is a major asset), but it would at least address the legitimate complaints regarding China's economic position (that being "they're cheating," since "they're winning" isn't a legitimate complaint). --- This is my signature.
