I don't see why. Unless they live in China this will likely drop the demand and therefore price of Soy.

ELI5 how tariffs work

you make foreign goods more expensive so people and businesses are encouraged to buy domestic products to save money. That way local businesses prosper instead of foreign ones.

Well that's the idea anyway.

The reality is what you see now. It's a complicated, sticky situation.

Well their tariffs aren't going to be in effect unless the US implements theirs and that would be in like July or August.

i always figured trump was using his tariff proposal as a negotiating tool, because his whole strategy is "I broke something. Want me to fix it? Give me what I actually want."

the response from china indicates "No, fix it or we'll break a ton of other shit", which will either lead to a lot of broken shit as trump keeps upping the ante (bad) or no progress on what he actually wants as he backs down (nbd)

investors sold shares premarket and over the last few days/weeks on fears of the former, but I expect them to figure he'll just take the L in the intermediate/longer term.

Asherlee10 posted...
Is this a direct result of Trump's tariffs?

yes, it's china negotiating as trump does.

Trump's reality is not the same one the rest of us live in. He literally ignores facts that go against what he wants.

look at the Amazon/PO debacle. people have told him numerous times that the PO profits from the Amazon contract and he does't give a fuck. in his mind, those people are probably all wrong because they dissent from the infallible Trump. his ego is so strong that, in his mind, it's objectively impossible for him to be wrong.

FWIW, friends, back in august I noticed koch industries announced they had increased their exposure to IWM, the small cap index, by ~1,000,000%, essentially starting a new 50 million dollar position that was their second largest overall.

I have been overweight small caps ever since. massive insider trading is happening with this corrupt-as-shit admin, and it's best to follow the money.

small caps have significantly outperformed large caps this year. where the S&P500 and NYA is below their 200 day moving averages, the russell 2000 is not.

such divergences suggest to me that this is a correction and not a bear market, but also that small caps will continue to outperform.

probably advance expectation of the drop that came in jan. even with that drawdown it's one of their largest holdings. and i expect in future filings we'll see they bought even more.

but i wasn't aware of them liquidating that holding--good detective work. filings happen well after the action, so i didn't know they'd done that at the time i bought in feb. haven't been disappointed in the buy, though.

bump

ironically the tariff announcement appears to at least be a short term bottom for the market

one of the funny things about investing is that news is usually priced in advance of its announcement and opposite moves follow as the good/bad has already come and gone

glad my technical indicator (russell/S&P divergences + NAAIM) was right.
