there are no official scientific committees that make up rules in how to name continents. Oceania, Australia for example. North, Central and South America and just Americas. Asia, Europe or Eurasia. Then just look at the cutoff for Africa

That's how it is in Spanish, especially South America:

"Americano" refers to anyone who lives in North or South America.

"Estadounidense" refers to someone who lives in the United States.

"Norteamericano" is also frequently used to refer to people from the US, although it would be preferable to refer to the country of origin, but never before you have actually confirmed it. Otherwise, you could say someone is from one country when they are really from another.
