You had a person with an advanced medical degree perform actual surgery on the most important "person" in your life and you're complaining that it cost $200. Gtfo.

part of the responsibility of owning a pet is having a few grand available for emergency vet bills

looking at it purely from a cost:benefit ratio, my doggies are probably the cheapest form of entertainment i have

tbh pet insurance is mostly a scam

i guess it's ok if your pup gets severely injured in its youth or develops an acute condition that's outside the norm

but it isnt gonna save you the costs on preventative care by any means and there's some hard age limits on it

I don't think they're saying it's an unfair amount of money for the person doing it. I think they mean the value they get of spending a lot of money on a sub-human animal doesn't meet their value threshold.

it makes sense, though, most people have no idea what their medical care actually costs, except for the uninsured who either don't use it, or would only probably be saying vets cost too much better they are destitute and can't even afford their own care

I feel the same about car insurance. I have to have it to be road legal, but I'm about 95% certain that if I had any kind of prang they'd throw half a dozen loopholes at me to not pay out. Additionally my quotes ranged from $400 a year to $1500 a year for the same cover, with comprehensive being much cheaper than third party only.

None of that makes sense no matter how much reasoning I throw at it.

probably mostly this, although i think even those people would see a doctor if they had the kind of problems that a vet will take care of for 200

I feel like there should be some kind of max out with auto insurance where you don't have to pay it anymore until you get in an accident and they have to pay you.

Insurers are not legally allowed to do this. Confusing or unclear policy terms that result in loopholes would end up with them getting sued, and courts very rarely side with the insurer when it comes to cases like these.

But yeah people who freak out at vet costs are silly. Some vets charge exorbitant prices compared to others, though. Definitely something you should shop around.

Can they not invalidate your cover if there's some little tickbox somewhere that's not 100% accurate? E.g. say you put on your quote you had your license for 9 years but actually it was 8 years and 10 months, that kind of thing?

They can rescind coverage if you make a misrepresentation of facts on your application, that's on you not them. It's important to know that an insurance policy is literally a legal contract, so you have to make sure what you give them is 100% accurate.

That being said, something so minuscule as when you originally became licensed likely wouldn't even be something you can screw up in the application process, they can run records on your license through the DMV and it would show that information.

The complaint isn't about the value of the care the vet can provide. It's about whether $7k for a surgery that might extend your dog's life a year is worth it. Because...its a pet...

The only thing that irritates me is yearly vaccines. These stack up quickly with multiple pets. I don't know enough about vaccines to understand why they HAVE to be yearly, why are they not designed like they are for humans? Meaning, they last a lifetime in most cases?

I know they have 3-year rabies, which is nice.

I shall ask my vet friend now and get back to you.

Vets probably don't find it any more fun than the people that need to pay for it. Animals can't communicate specifics of their symptoms, so they're literally just working down a list of things that are most likely to least likely based off the information they know. It's definitely an understandable frustration though.

After so many years working with animal rescue I'm much more hesitant to stick in a fuck ton of money on surgery. Yes my pets deserve the best and I'll do everything I can for them

But the outcome of many procedures is not like with humans

After care is difficult, quality of life can be greatly diminished

I'm still in debt care of a now dead cat

Yeah my dog has an ongoing eyelid infection, my vet referred me to this guy who specializes in eye stuff and quoted me 800 dollars for the equivalent of removing a splinter. Granted my dog still has the issue, but when I looked it up I found it takes a few months to clear up on its own. I want my vet to look at it again, fuck that eye place.

From my experience, absolutely.

When I was a kid we owned a pug that was 2 years old at the time. Suddenly he stopped being able to piss. After two days my mom took him to the vet as were were getting really worried. (It was late, hour drive to the closest place still open)

Vet wanted a grand before even looking at him, my mom borrowed money from a friend to make the payment. After some tests the vet told her he would die very soon if she didn't shell out another $3,000 to drain the fluid and correct the problem. She couldn't afford it of course, and so he was put down.

I found out all this the next morning. Shit sucked man.
