The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media.

Some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias.

This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.

The script came from Sinclair Broadcast Group, the countrys largest broadcaster, which owns or operates 193 television stations.

Last week, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer published a copy of the speech and reported that employees at a local news station there, KOMO, were unhappy about the script.

Sinclair regularly sends video segments to the stations it owns. These are referred to as must-runs, and they can include content like terrorism news updates, commentators speaking in support of President Trump or speeches from company executives like the one from Mr. Livingston last year.

Must-run segments are handed down to local news stations from a corporate headquarters. That was bad. But having news anchors have to read the script themselves is apparently new, and extra unnerving.

some folks who work for those stations were posting on reddit anonymously in an AMA Request. Basically they all hate having to do those must runs but your options basically boil down to "run the script or destroy everything you've done to build up your career in media"

The biggest problem with monopolies is not the control of the product but the lack of options for employment.

Saw that on John Oliver. Not a show I watch, but I happened to catch that segment. It's pretty crazy that they would expect it to be spoken verbatim without thinking someone would pick up on it.

You could maybe get away with that in 1973, but not when there's internet or the ability to send recorded videos to one another by way of mobile phone.

Next time, tell them the gist of the message and have them put it in their own words.

the FCC. and they've been deregulating it since Trump took over.

conveniently, the guy who owns Sinclair requested that Trump relax those very restrictions so its merger would go through. and guess what? he got what he wanted, and their merger will be approved and their market share will increase.

Does anybody actually think they're getting a unique perspective from 99.99% of news channels on TV anywhere in the world? I thought it was painfully obvious that pretty much everything on tv is controlled by lizard people and the only people that swallow that brain numbing shit are the senior citizens dying in nursing homes. Median viewer age for Fox News is like 68 and left leaning networks are about 63. It's all old fucks.

This is a labor issue:

A Sinclair journalist, who has been trying to resist from inside the newsroom but who doesnt have a union explains why its so hard for TV anchors to refuse the Sinclairs editorial edicts. They have contracts that penalize them if they quit.

Is there any way to regulate this?

The FCC can - and has in the past - place checks on how many stations, how much market share an individual entity is allowed to own. But under Trump, is expected to clear Sinclair's path to growth

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2017/10/18/fcc-extends-sinclair-tribune-merger-comment-period-until-nov-2/778295001/

Several consumer, TV and tech groups oppose the merger, saying it would put too much power in the hands of a single broadcaster. A combined Sinclair-Tribune company would surpass the federally-mandated maximum reach of 39% of national TV homes. With the deal, Sinclair has said its reach would grow to 72% of U.S. homes across 108 markets including 39 of the top 50.

Sinclair said it would need to sell broadcast licenses in at least two markets to meet regulatory approval. The Department of Justice, which is also reviewing the merger, might require the divesting of some licenses, the company said.

The expanded broadcaster would own two of the top four affiliates in 10 of the 14 markets where Sinclair and Tribune currently operate stations on their own a violation of the FCC's television ownership rules, opponents say.

Back in April, the FCC loosened TV ownership rules by reinstating the so-called UHF discount, which allows broadcasters to count UHF stations as having only half the reach of VHF channels. Chairman Ajit Pai has said he may support the eventual elimination of the UHF discount, but as part of an overall review of the ownership cap.

By the millions, my dude. More people watch their local news than CNN; I'd just about guarantee

Mind you, this was 5 years ago and much has changed, but
http://www.journalism.org/2013/10/11/how-americans-get-tv-news-at-home/

Almost three out of four U.S. adults (71%) watch local television news and 65% view network newscasts over the course of a month, according to Nielsen data from February 2013. While 38% of adults watch some cable news during the month, cable viewersparticularly the most engaged viewersspend far more time with that platform than broadcast viewers do with local or network news.

Jesus Christ it is much worse than I thought.

That is absolutely embarrassing. Why are people watching that garbage? To think they'd willingly subject themselves to lizard propaganda like that. It's all fear mongering bullshit meant to terrify and divide them. Just go on the fucking Internet and read from unbiased or multiple sources.

I mean, it's pretty clear that news agencies often get their material from the same source, leading to very clearly similar broadcasts. Unless the material is actually propaganda (of which I wouldn't call "beware of fake news"), then I don't really see how this is anything other than an over reaction.

But I may not be fully informed, I pretty much only saw that video with the scripts overlaid.
