I have a Facebook and Twitter account, but I don't use them often, and when I do, it's usually to reply to other people's posts. There's nothing very interesting going on in my life for me to document on social media, and even if there was, I probably still wouldn't do it since I like my privacy. I don't really care if people post every so often, but I raise my eyebrows at the people who post constantly every day, retweeting every tweet or article they see. I just don't get it.

Maybe I don't see the appeal of social media since I'm pretty antisocial irl, but idk. I think some people just go too far with it. Anybody agree?

Social media is all about being popular.

Having a lot of friends, having a lot of likes and thumbs ups.

And bragging about your life. The pictures of your food, the pictures of your body, pictures of your boyfriend/girlfriend.

Sounds a lot like real life, just with more control.

Hello MabinogiFan,

I never met a fan of the series in the general area of gamefaqs. What do you think of Vindictus?

Yeah I don't care about social media either. Only good thing about it is to possibly find long lost friends or family in your past, but other than that I'd rather kind of have my privacy.

Mabinogi is the MMO I've invested the most time in, bar none. I instantly fell in love with it back when it first came out in 2008 in NA. I still remember checking the website every day for new Lorna and Pan videos and beta announcements. I've sunk hundreds of hours into the game, but I haven't played it much recently. I had ranked almost all the Close Combat skills to Rank 1, and I was getting bored with the game. I was running out of things I wanted to do. I'm also not the biggest fan of the direction the game has gone in recent years. It still holds a special place in my heart though.

Vindictus is okay. I've played only a little of it though. I've also dabbled in Dragon Nest and played a lot of Maplestory.

I had a Myspace account for about six months (almost to the day), until people from my past I didn't want to deal with managed to use it to track me down and attempt to communicate. And then I deleted it.

I barely used it at the time anyway, and didn't really want it in the first place, and only really jumped on the bandwagon because everyone else was. So when it got annoying I was perfectly okay with the idea of punching out and never looking back.

No social media service since (and no, I'm not counting message boards like this one) has really offered me anything of substance to make me want to create a Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr/Reddit/etc account. Nor was I ever really motivated to jump into things like Livejournal in the pre-Myspace days.

Social media is all about being popular.

Not really. It's about the illusion of popularity. It's why so many people on Twitter seem to define their self-worth based on their number of followers, but don't actually care about how many of those followers might be bots or reflexive mindless follow-backs of people who don't give a single shit about them. The ability to quantify "popularity" with a concrete number (no matter how meaningless that number actually is) is a potent lure to people with poor self-worth.

It's similar to when you go to a therapist, and they pretend to listen to you for an hour because you pay them. In spite of the fact that they don't really care about you in the same way an actual close friend or confidant would, the mere fact that you can talk to them about your issues makes you feel psychologically better about those problems, even if the person doesn't actually offer you any solutions for those problems. In the same way, for many people, Twitter is essentially an artificial "listener" (or amalgam of "listeners") who exist for you to unburden yourself to, and occasionally offer empty platitudes and insincere praise and support back to you.

Arguably, it also touches on the same nerve that cults and/or legitimate religions (like Scientology and Christianity, and you can decide for yourself which fits which category) can exploit with "confession", because the act of unburdening yourself to an ostensibly non-judgemental listener has a powerful effect on the human psyche (something other humans learned how to exploit a very long time ago).

Social media is basically just the modern digital version of tricking people into feeling like they matter in some way, and that someone is listening to them, and thus providing them with a level of personal validation, even if it's not true.

That's because you'd probably have to be a self absorbed narcissist to get it. People that dedicated to social media are sick. It's an addiction. Mentally stable individuals don't crave likes and comments so much

Agreed. I'm so tempted to give an example of a Twitter account I don't like, but I'd prefer not to give them or their content more traffic. Just know that they post/retweet a lot of anti-SJW related stuff.

I love it. Its a good way to get to know people, IMO. (Like if you casually know someone and are friends with them on Facebook, its a good way to know more about their interests and stuff).

Its possible to use this stuff without the I have to get as many likes as possible mentality
