I will say, stuff like this is the reason I recommend watching the original first over Brotherhood. You get a whole episode with Nina and the Tuckers before "ed-ward" happens whereas Brotherhood debuts and kills her in one episode.

The first one definitely has worse pacing but I like the characters a lot more, felt like they had more emotion and the whole series seemed darker.

You mean Brotherhood, right? That's the one that speeds through and oh god she's a dog and it's so fucking sad

No I meant the first one. Worse pacing as in its slower and has more filler.

smh

Brotherhood gets better about its pacing, but it rushes through the early portion so you don't get as much gravitas for certain parts.

The development of the Tuckers and Hughes is so much better in the first series then in Brotherhood where both are rushed. I love both anime each have different strengths and weaknesses.

Kind of going off on a tangent here but did anyone else feel slightly unable to figure out the size of the world?

It felt like the characters travelled to all these distant lands in like a day and then went back again for lunch sometimes. Something about the pacing was off putting in that sense.

Great animes otherwise.

Wow so many people dislike brotherhood here. I felt like I was the only one who liked the first one better. I don't care if it doesn't follow the book. To me it is better.

I think brotherhood had a better tone but as soon as it started going off on a tangent it lost the plot, imo.

The pacing of FMA 03 really helps land those emotional moments like the one described in the OP. FMA 03 is also more willing to let you marinade in those negative feelings before offering you a way forward.

Amestris isn't that huge of a country. they're not going to "distant lands" (except for Ed and Al at the end of Brotherhood)

I know it's not supposed to be a huge country, but the amount it varied in a day's journey gave me that feeling.

It does feel like Xing is some distance away. So even if the setting is that large, it does feel like Amestris is really isolated (and vulnerable).

While we are speaking about it. Something I didn't like on either of them . But if I remember right it was worse in Brotherhood. But Ed would always bitch about people fighting back, with out giving suggestions on what they could do.

there also isn't much detail on how fast the trains are. a day's journey by train today could take you from Montreal to Saskatoon - vastly different climates and landscapes

they're not so much isolated as expansionist and militaristic. aside from the Eastern Desert, their shared borders are with countries that have long histories of military conflict and border disputes with Amestris

I was watching the first FMA before Netflix took it off, but they've put them both back now, so I decided just to jump into Brotherhood because I heard it's better.

Should I just go back to the first FMA then? It seems a lot of people here like it more

there are a couple things that Brotherhood has over 2003 - the coded messages and the people from Xing being the most prominent.

but 2003's overall tone is just much better for the story, and I find it much more enjoyable because of that

the origin of the homunculi is also much more interesting and personal in 2003

Seriously, 03 is great drama, and Brotherhood is great plot, especially when you consider the scale of everything going on. The first thirteen episodes of Brotherhood kind of feel like they expect you to know 03.

Brotherhood is the manga so its manga purists that tend to prefer it over the first series. I like both about equally.
