Lucas has less to do with Star Wars than you think. the original trilogy was made by a collaboration of people. alot of ideas Lucas had for those movies got rejected by the group. like making Han a lizardman. if Lucas had as much control for the OT as he did for the PT, star wars would have failed with A New Hope and ended forever after just one bad movie.
