However Golden Compass main character is a girl and technically coming-of-age is significant in the story.

Young Wizards series by Dianne Dunne (sp) (So you want to be a wizard is the first book).

First few books of the riftwar saga by Reymand Feist (sp)...they are magician/aprentice/master I believe.

First buncha books in David Eddings Belgariad series (pawn of prophecy is the first).

Just about every Recluce book by L.E. Modesit (most of his other series also start with the main character as a child or young as well).

The first buncha books in The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan (does go downhill eventually though).

Most of the Xanth books and quite a few other books by Piers Anthony

I think Skeeve was a kid at first, and there is a baby dragon, so Myth books by Robert Asprin

Tons of other good ones out there, too many to list but that will get you started:)

My favorite genere now adays is urban fantasy, which sadly doesn't have too many books that revolve around children or teens just reaching maturity. There are some (armstrong I think did some), but it usually revolves around adults it seems.

Jim butcher is still my favorite author, though I'm getting tired of waiting for another Dresden book. Aeronauts was good, but meh....give me my dresden fix!!

A story of a young girl who disguises herself as a boy and joins the British navy in order to live a better life.

And I seconded wolf's young wizards suggestion.

The sight is good and sort of coming of age. If coming of age from other species count.

If we are gonna hit stephen King, I'd say read The Long Walk (heh, the grow up fast in that book), and possibly The Medallion. Firestarter isn't really a coming of age book, but really good, and Carrie is...well everyone knows what carrie is by now (was never a favorite of mine though).

Earths Children (Think thats the name of the series) that starts with Clan of the Cave Bears is certainly a coming of age book/series...and quite good. Way better then the movie which wasn't horrid either.

Enders Game and later on the Shadow of Enders books all revolve around children being forced to grow up fast etc...and are excellent. I'd skip the second and third books though (speaker of the dead...and whatever the other one was) as I didn't like them much.

Dune is certainly a coming of age book lol.....though again, not a huge fan of the second or third, then the 4th gets a bit better, and then it's good again after that (but have not read the new ones by his relative or whoever wrote them).

The name of the wind series (kingkiller or something like that) is also very good and reminds me alot of L.E. Modesets writing. It's very popular and certain a coming of age fantasy book.

Finally, my favorite author, Jim Butcher wrote a fantasy series as well (before the steampunk windglass book..which is also kinda about kids coming of age, or at least some of the characters, and a cat.....whatever)......anyway the Codex Alera books are good, not as great as the Dresden books to me, but more along the lines of what your looking for it seems.

Ok, I could go on for days, so I'll stop there, but there are tons and tons and tons of good option, you'll never run out. I know, I've been reading them for 40 years and I still haven't (though for the first 20 I did quite often). Now there are so many you literally could read a new one a day for the rest of your life probably.
