https://www.thedailybeast.com/teens-face-corporal-punishment-in-rural-arkansas-for-participating-in-student-walkout

My kid and two other students walked out of their rural, very conservative, public school for 17 minutes today, Greer wrote on Twitter. They were given two punishment options. They chose corporal punishment. This generation is not playing around.

Greer later said that the students faced what the school calls swats.

According to Greenbrier Public Schools official policy, the school board authorizes the use of corporal punishment to be administered in accordance with this policy by the Superintendent or his/her designated staff members who are required to have a state-issued license as a condition of their employment.

The handbook says that before students are smacked they are to be given an explanation of the reasons for the punishment and be given an opportunity to refute the charges. administered privately, i.e. out of the sight and hearing of other students.

Greenbrier Public School, which is located in a town of roughly 5,000 people, only first adopted the seemingly outdated disciplinary policy in 2005 and last updated it in 2012.

The rural Arkansas schools policy does caution administrations that the physical punishment should not be excessive, or administered with malice and should be administered in the presence of another school official or licensed staff member of the district.

The schools assistant principal, Brett Meek, hung up the phone when The Daily Beast reached out for comment on the schools regulations. The schools superintendent, Scott Spainhour, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

lmao rural arkansas is an awful place

literally only adopted corporal punishment in the year of our lord 2005

Anyway, presumably skipping class has always been against the rules.

I mean, honestly, going back to a system of public lashings would be far superior to the current correctional system we have

so I kinda agree with your conclusion but maybe not on your reasoning lol

In Chicago, in the mid-late 80s, teachers would smack kids that back mouthed or really acted out in extreme cases. In the classroom in open view as a lesson to other kids, and to take us down a notch. I learned to keep my smart mouth shut. Those ladies didn't take shit.

You guys do know that the parents sign off on this when they enroll their kids into that school. Also, there is a choice. Choose the suspension or choose the swats.

They chose the swats and now they are complaining?

the only statutory guidance in Arkansas laws about corporal punishment is that it is okay to do if the school district says it is. Many districts allow parents to opt out, but that isn't the same thing as getting their permission.

not here in arkansas

https://www.arktimes.com/ArkansasBlog/archives/2017/03/15/bid-to-eliminate-corporal-punishment-in-schools-fails

Sen. Joyce Elliott (D-Little Rock), lead sponsor of Senate Bill 610, said that corporal punishment should be a parent's responsibility and that allowing corporal punishment in schools sends the wrong message to kids.

"It should be the mission of our schools, I think, to teach our kids ways of resolving conflict other than there having to be physical conflict," Elliott said in an interview.

During questions, Sen. Alan Clark (R-Lonsdale) asked Elliott if she believed corporal punishment "never works."

"We can talk about my experiences with corporal punishment," Clark said. "I'll just say, I found them to be quite effective."

Clark relayed one experience he had in which a principal paddled his son in seventh grade for "horsing around in the football dressing room." The handbook said the school should suspend the boy for three days, but the principal opted to punish with the paddle instead.

"I got fire in my eyes, y'all have seen me that way, and I said, 'If you had suspended my seventh grader for three days for horsing around in the dressing room, I would have been mad.' So there are different value systems here," Clark said.

Elliott responded, "I think you were in that position because you've been forced into a false choice" between suspension or corporal punishment.

I would have died laughing if a teacher had told me they were going to hit me. I guess from about 7th grade and below I would have been too scared to resist. But by 8th or 9th grade I would have kicked the living shit out of any teacher who tried to hit me. Actually I would have just walked out and left. If they had grabbed me then theyd be bringing in the school resource officer to pull me off that teacher.

Oooooh. A badass i like
