We use to have 15 checkout lanes and when I went in earlier to get some bottled water and they are taking out 10 of them and expanding the self checkout area. The look on the regular employees faces was one of dread since they're obviously laying off service members in favor of the machines.

Might be the straw that makes them realize they need to learn a skill before they're next.

WalMart has been doing this for years now. My local WalMart has had self checkout for over a decade. They also still have like 20 normal lanes and for as long as i can remember (going all the way back to since i was a kid) they'd only man 3 of those at a time.

This "OMG SELF CHECKOUT" narrative people like TC try to use as proof that raising the wage is bad is laughable.

Mine did the same thing but around the holidays they actually staffed the lanes and now it seems like there's 4 or so at all times. The pendulum kinda swung back already here.

Lazy I think is more it. I use the newly expanded self checkout at our local Walmart, and the lines with cashiers will be 10 deep sometimes and only like 2 out of 10 self checkouts are being used.

We always had the small express checkouts at our local Walmart. The newly expanded ones are just like a cashier manned checkout complete with full conveyor belt and bigger bagging area than the express ones.

There are 20 items or less, small station ones, then full sized conveyor belts where you are basically the cashier.

There are only 5 human cashier lanes left and maybe 25-30 self checkouts now.

Hmmm. Your city must be more motivated to do for themselves than mine then. What's worse is there's only usually 5-8 manned checkouts open, and I am usually going at peak times, right after work, getting there 5:30-6pm like most people.

This. The number of staff isn't changing, they're just utilizing their space better.
Also, have they added the scanners to yours yet?
Those things are fuckin awesome. Scan things as you put them in the cart (bring boxes or bags) and attach the scanner to the checkout at the end. Pay and go.

At our local one, at the moment, only the express self checkouts weigh what you scan. The full sized ones do not. So yes, technically it would be easy to steal. Alcohol would be the only thing a employee has had to authorize that I have bought so far anyway.

Once, one of the machines was giving me consistently a bad time of taking too long to go from red to green after putting the item in the bag. So I tested it: I "scanned" a second item, and then a third one (which didn't ring, because it was busy weighing the first one). Then it turned green, and didn't complain about the extra weight. If it was going to give me a hard time, I was going to take advantage of it.

This. I love them when I can walk right up but if there's a line then it's usually for a reason, which is because there are a bunch of morons that can't figure out how to use it.

I also love when someone goes in with an entire cart filled to the top with groceries. At least use the damn self checkouts that have conveyor belts.

Speaking of check-out lanes my grocery store has 4 of the small stations that are really only helfpul if you have 5 or 10 items. The other day this dude rolled up to one with a shopping cart completley filled with stuff

It probably took him 30 min. to check everything out

I just don't understand that thought process

Yeah its a brain dead entitled thought process. They think they can do anything they want, but are too dumb to realize they're doing more work. I had like 30 items last night. I went to a manned checkout, since it wasn't Walmart, and there were three people in front of me. At the same time this dude rolls into the already busy express self checkout with a full cart. Dude was still checking out when I rolled out. Dumbass.
