it's as simple as restricting your caloric intake to a safe level in regards to what you burn every day.

getting fat is not inevitable unless you have some rare genetic disorder.

Also eat foods that make feel full. If you eat a diet with plenth fiber, protein etc you will feel hungry less often.

If you walk down the street in Europe you almost never see fat people. Not even overweight people. And they're not in amazing shape or anything, they're just not fat.

You just live in a fat area where it's cool to eat ultra high calorie food. Ordinary calorie food fills you up just as much.

yeah i tend to do this as well. on that note i personally like to pace my meals at around 4 through the day so there's less time in between. if you're losing weight and slam all your calories in one sitting, you're going to probably feel pretty hungry by the end of the day.

edit: i'm not currently cutting weight, just maintaining.

I'm from Scotland and even though we're the fat people of Europe I'm still absolutely horrified at what you guys consider a normal sized portion. Cut that in half and make half of it salad, that's a portion.

Then again I'm sure you're absolutely horrified at what we consider food to begin with...

Everyone is always trying to convince you it's some dramatic change in your metabolic rate but no one seems to consider the dramatic change in lifestyle and occupation. When I was 19 I worked in a car wash and drank light beer once or twice a week. Now I work behind a desk and drink craft beer every day. Well no shit I put on weight.

Way to lump all countries in Europe into one generic place where there are no fat people. I can only speak about my own country (Finland) and there is plenty of obesity here, but its not like people are huge landwhales, but obesity is an issue here too.

You can't expect everyone to be able to do everything you can, because they aren't you. Reasons for becoming fat or just living unhealthy isn't the same for all. Sure, the food is the issue but what pushes people to do it varies. I usually consider CE being smart or having deep thoughts, except when it comes to obesity. That's when everyone's narcissism blooms hard and all thinking ends there.

Ok, but the other side of this argument is that some people seem to give obesity a pass when it comes to personal responsibility and consequences that they wouldn't give to other things. If I drove drunk every day and then had an accident and died people would say I never should have done that and I should have been locked up from day one or had my license to drive revoked. They might even say I deserved it. But eat a pack of donuts and 5 litres of mountain dew every day and die of coronary heart disease and people will say it's a tragic loss and it's just a shame I had my problems.

It's not like the defining distinction there is whether you can hurt other people or not. People look down on alcoholism freely even if you're not driving drunk. It's enough if you're just ruining your liver.

At some point you have to take responsibility into your own hands.

I think his point is that making considerable permanent life change is something we all struggle with in various ways but fail to understand on this particular topic, which I somewhat agree with. If you had cripplying alcoholism it wouldn't be helpful for me to tell you "just put down the bottle, how hard is it".

Eating disorders are absurdly common and not simply restricted to people with thyroid issues.

take your argument and replace 'food' with 'drugs'. people that are obese are addicts of food, plain and simple. sure, almost every addict out there has their own story that lead them into addiction, but all of them are essentially facing the same struggle that they're putting things into their bodies that are providing temporary happiness at the expense of long-term health.

the major difference being that one can survive without drugs. surviving without food is pretty hard.

i agree with you that it's easy for an outsider who doesn't understand addiction to say "how hard is it? just dont <insert activity here>". however, i was a crippled alcoholic for about three years and that's ultimately exactly what i had to do: just stop drinking. it was just a matter of me reaching a tipping point where i was sick and tired of being sick and tired. i had my 'moment of clarity', as they say.

what helped me come around was people explaining things to me calmly and rationally and to NOT be accusatory or make me feel defensive. of course, i had to make the decision on my own, but the input from other people certainly influenced my decision.

naw I was already wrong once in this topic and dont wanna embarrass myself again, we are way fatter than europe lol

the last stats I saw for Europe were 60% overweight and about 22% obese

when I hear an obese person make excuses about why they can't loose weight i think back to all the excuses i made to rationalize me continuing my own addiction. the addict brain is wonderful at rationalization. we always have our reasons for why we can't quit today or why things were going well but something happened and we slipped up.

"it feels to bad to quit today. i need to just cut back and ill quit later"

"i can't quit today because i have to attend this social function and i can't be feeling that anxiety"

"i can't quit today because it's Friday!"

"i can't quit today because something pissed me off and I need to cope with that"

but at the same time i empathize and i understand the struggle because it's fucking hard. the desire to quit has to come from within, nobody can force anyone else to give up an addiction. only you can make the change.

I personally don't understand this logic. "It's hard".

So? What if there was a direct, known way to be rich. But it was hard. It took some work every day for a few years. You had to change some aspects of your lifestyle. Would you just say "well guess I'm stuck being poor"?
